I really enjoy world coins especially German and Austria coins and medals and tokens of all kinds. I recently purchased these at a great deal and thought I would share them with group. I'm researching them now and any input would be appreciated. Christopher Columbus medal - Aluminum 47 - 48 mm - 15.64 g - 0.552 oz "approx" Chicago Columbia Exposition - Worn but but I loved the detail. Austria 1721 Silver Thaler Charles V1 43 mm - 31.83 - 1.122 oz Thanks, Steve "approx"
lookup my website on Charles VI and beyond - http://www.taleruniverse.com/the-ta...alers-by-habsburg-ruler/charles-vi-1711-1740/
The Columbus medal was produced by Mayer & Wilhelm of Stuttgart, Germany. Russell Rulau notes that this piece was adapted from a similar (though larger) medal designed and struck by the same firm for the Italo-American Exposition in Genoa in 1892.
Cool the design work is stunning and I believe the same medal was made from white metal. Thanks Steve
Yes, Rulau lists both white metal and bronze in addition to aluminum. Definitely a nice design; I used to own a bronze example myself.
Question - I've never seen the Rulau, but does it attempt to date tokens, specifically ones post 1940?
The information above comes from Rulau's "Discovering America: The Coin Collecting Connection", which covers an eclectic group of materials related in some way to the discovery of America. Unfortunately, I do not own Rulau's work on tokens, so I cannot speak to its content.
Question for Zohr444, do you know what percent of silver was used for the taler? I understand a lot of world coins use different percent 0.800, 0.500, 0.925, 0.999. Steve
Thanks, Do you know the purity of silver? I did an acid silver puritest on the test stone and the color turned brown, which is 0.800 purity. Steve
Nice ... that's a very cool addition (congrats) ... Wow => "huge" game tomorrow, my 49ers friend!! (I too am a hard-core 9ers-fan!!) The Seahawks are an awesome squad, but I'm hoping that our heroes come-up big!! Oh, and Happy Yankee Thanksgiving!! Ummm, I have decided to fly my festive holiday avatar!! Cheers, brother
You bet, We got them this time I have faith. Justin Smith is one strong man and he is my favorite. I'm from C.T. and have loved the 49ers for a long time. I used to have a good friend Bill Romanowski who played for them. I knew him since I was 5 years old. I am a huge NFL fan for the game. I still wish we kept Alex Smith. Eat well and good luck, Steve
