I am unfamiliar with the term mortar set. What is a mortar set?

Thank you muchly for the Website link. I had not seen the site before.

Obviously I need to brush up on my Canadian. Perhaps the word "Mortar" comes from the root word Mort or death as in death of a die. The terms "die deterioration doubling" or "deteriorated die" make more sense to me.

The Canada coin website also lists a "retarded coin" of which I was not familiar.
