I bought another uncleaned lot and pulled this one out straight away, didn't need any cleaning. I have little experience with Greeks but I know the obverse has the head of Athena helmeted but I have no idea what the reverse is. Can anyone help me out identifying it?

p.s. got some more really nice ones in this lot, will post pictures after cleaning, I'm pretty sure I made some money on this lot :) IMG_20141122_174618[1].jpg IMG_20141122_174536[1].jpg

How can you make money with such a condition of ancient coins ?

OK. Hope the next would be more valuable and easier to identify. Good luck indeed.

Thanks, got an interesting mix here of judean, greek, roman, islamic and probably more. That's why I buy from these lots, mostly for the historical value and identifying different types of coins :) Sometimes I lose a bit or break even but the last few lots I bought from these guys I made my money back from just one coin out of approximately 40. I'll make another post soon and give a review of this dealer.

The reverse shows a pomegranate (turn your picture 180 degrees). You'll find similar coins on the Side, Pamphylia page in Wildwinds.

aaah thank you, very oddly shaped pomegranate (I hope its not just the condition of my coin lol). Damn seems like wildwinds is down so I'll have to check it out later. Thanks again.

The question remains on who would buy such a coin and give you a profit. I suspect the answer is found in people who do not know that you can get boring ancient coins in better condition or interesting coins in this grade with very little effort. Most of us who hang around here have a few coins at least this bad but we collected them because there was something interesting that allowed us to overlook the ugliness. There is always a strong market for boring coins in high grade and interesting types in just about any grade. Making a profit on 40 of these, none better, none more interesting, will require finding just the right buyers. Show us the one in the 40 that made it worth the effort.

My coin budget is pretty tight and to be honest I collect more for historical value rather than monetary value, and so I want as much as I can get for my buck. I've been buying off a website called crustyromans who are based in the UK. They sell by weight from their various "hoards" of which they bought off other sellers and so there is a risk of buying coins that have been handled by several people. But it's reasonably cheap and (from the hoard I bought from) 70% of the coins are identifiable. I'm going to make a new post soon and give them a sort of review, show the coins that I've pulled out of cleaning so far.
