Grading is an opinion, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. So whats your opinion on the grade of this Bust Half Dollar?

Ok I will be the jerk and call it a VG08. I appreciate the eye detail, but the ear is about obliterated. The rim fading on the reverse is not helping either.

Some times Bust Halves can really throw a curve ball at you, if they are struck weak they can look like they have more wear than they actually do. Most Bust Half collectors will use the eagle's left wing or the wing on your right to grade.

True, but look at the scroll. The scroll is actually exceedingly a great strike, so I do not see any evidence of the weak strike sir. In my experience the scroll having weak letters is the easiest clue as to quality of strike. This one is very strong, (actually I love the coin in that regard), but has wear all over the reverse so much so the legends are starting to blend into the rims.

I think I'm in the F-12 camp as well, but I do tend to overgrade CBHs.

My first thought was VG10. However, after looking at the screenshot of the PCGS Photograde I'll say VG08. Obverse looks 06 reverse looks 10, meet in the middle and call it an 08.

I would call it an 8. Not enough obv hair definition to be a Fine.

I would say VG8 on the obverse as there is very little detail remaining on the bust. The left wing shows even more feather detail than the VG10 example, so the reverse may be closer to an F12. Since the obverse usually dominates I would say VG10, or F12 if somebody was really being generous.

HOWEVER... If the grade wasn't a surprise you probably wouldn't have posted the coin. Also, the coin is in a new PCGS holder and there have been a lot of stories lately about those being overgraded.

So I'm going to go out on a limb and say they graded it F15 or even VF20...

Even if you were to use the PCGS pics as a grading guide, which all by itself is a bad idea in my opinion, but IF you were to use it, look at the VG8 pics. The rim is present all the way around the coin.

Now look at the G6. The rim is partially worn flat. Thus this coin, by those standards, can be no better than a G6. And it doesn't matter how much detail is left on one wing. If the rim is partially worn away, it can't be any better than G6.

Now what do ya want to bet that PCGS did not follow their own standards ?
