1997 was the last year that they came in these cool red-satin and black leather cases ....... ummm, I still continue to buy the sets to-date, but they are now housed in a more modern case (still cool, but not as cool as these bad-boyz!!) ... ummm, yah those first few are actually "home-made" => I bought some empty cases and started collecting the proof sets (I went back to 1963, which is my birth-year) ... but the first official double dollar proof set in this packaging was 1971
=> there are no missing coins, brother ... As I stated before, those first few sets were merely homemade (they didn't sell those double-dollar sets prior to 1971) ... I merely bought some empty cases and filled 'em up from 1963 through 1970 ... 1971 was the first year that the RCM sold those sweet red & black cases (my first few are boot-legged!!) ... the last year they sold them was 1997 ... => Hey, I'm glad that you enjoyed 'em (also glad to hear that you have a bunch of your own => yes, they're very cool) Cheers
That's why if you really like the coins , you'll get them out of those packages and into something that will protect them . But if your more interested in the packing then more power to you .
yah => the whole thing about those coins is the "packaging" .... 99% of those coins are *whateva* ... I admit that the cool thing about those sets is the "sets" => hey, don't get me wrong => if there are any super-cool (and precious) examples in those cases, then I've already rushed them to the hospital!! => again, the cool part about those sets is the "Canadiana" ... => they're fricken cool, right? (detecto is farly accurate => they're not that expensive) ... but again, how cool? (uber-cool, my friend => capital "U") Oh, and by the way => most of those babies have been sitting in those cases for 50 to 30 years (overall, those sweet dawgs are still doin' okay) Cheers, you lil' double-dollar convicts!! (I love you guys)
What years did they make these sets? You said '97 was the last year, when did they start? I have a '80 and '85. There is also a mention of a VIP proof set, what was that all about?
Well, we all know that you're the pro on Canadian Proof sets, so I bow to you my friend => lesson learned (thanks)
Nothing wrong collecting coins that were issued in original boxes. In fact, I would pay a significant premium for them. Many of the Panda wooden boxes issued by China sell for 20 dollars, more for some of the scarcer coins. A while ago I completed a complete set of Soviet silver coins that come with the original COA and box. Turns out this is a lot harder than what one think and more expensive than you imagine.
