Hey guys, I have a 1974 kennedy half that looks like a proof coin, very shiny, but has no S mark. The coin has a weight of 11.7 grams which is what a 40% would weigh. I couldnt find any info on this coin, but do not know too much about errors or coins in general. Any help would be appreciated.
It looks plated to me. Also, like chromerunner said, seems that it used to be in a piece of jewelry. You can see where the bezel was attached at 12, 3, 6, and 9 oclock.
There is only a .16g difference. I don't know how much plating would weigh, but I don't think that's a lot of weight. 1965-1970: 11.50 g 1971-Date: 11.34 g
had met excited there.....I have been looking and the highlight of my coin searches would be a 77D or 71D 40% half.....that is until I read this thread. The one at the top is plated and was in a bezel, but I want to thank you for raising MY bar...Kudos!
But when you factor in the mints weight tolerance range the picture muddies up a lot 1965 - 1970:11.1 g - 11.9 g 1971 - Date:10.89 g - 11.79 g So any coin that weighs between 11.1 g - 11.79 g could be either one. On the Coin Community forum someone found one of the 1977-D 40% silver clad halves, and when he finally had it slabbed by NGC it stated the weight on the slab as 11.33 grams. So i was a 40% half with the official weight of a coppernickel clad half.
