I'm finishing up cataloging a bunch of world coins I just got from a trade and noticed something very weird. Can anyone help explain why the 2014 Standard Catalog of World Coins 2001-Present has the South African cents each having a separate KM# despite looking exactly identical even in description? What makes it even more strange is that some of the later years have earlier KM#s. Does anyone know why this is?
I have not looked at the 2014 issue but it might be because the coins have English legends and the others have Afrikaans legends. "South Africa" "Suid Afrika"
For the period of 1965-1969, South Africa issued coins with an Afrikaans legend and an English legend separately, as these were the two official languages at the time. It can be quite a challenge to find all coins from one cent to the silver one rand in pristine uncirculated condition, 1965 is particularly a tough year as no uncirculated sets were issued. More current South African coins have different legends in one of the 11 official languages of the country under the Constitution of 1996.
