What do you think is the strangest coin ever issued for circulation, either strange because of composition, denomination, shape, circumstances, etc. I'm not talking about the weird coins with the holy water or sound clips or movable parts which were issued as collectible items, but rather coins that were issued for the purpose of general circulation. I would have to go with the Canadian V Nickle with the morse-code along the perimeter.
I think i find these coins to be, a little bit peculiar http://news.coinupdate.com/transnistria-to-introduce-plastic-circulation-coins-4441/
I have a difficult time accepting those as coins. Coins, by my definition are some sort of struck metal. These seem more like a variation of paper money.
There's many out there that's different and some can be obtained surprisingly cheap. Take for instance Mexico 1 peso. Yes I know it looks boring but look at the specs: http://www.banxico.org.mx/billetes-...e-fabricacion-actual/monedas/1-peso-coin.html I think it's quite an overkill with ten different elements. If you know any coins that were struck with more elements, I would be very interested to know. Antimony coin Not popular and it didn't circulate for too long... And then you have coins from Cook Islands Triangle coin And then a rather interesting coin. This is from a mint set but I believed it did circulate You would have some funky primitive money such as Katanga cross, cowry shell, wire money etc.
It would have to be between the Austrian monetary reform of 1892 Hellers that have no lettering (KM#2801 2 Heller for example) and the German WWI issue iron "kopeks" coins for the Eastern front (KM#21, 22 & 23).
I like these fake 8 reales coins minted in England. They had copper inside, and were made to wreck confidence in Spanish silver:
