Just won this on Heritage. What do you think? Good buy? http://coins.ha.com/itm/three-cent-...edia-wsl-price-for-problem-f/a/131445-24338.s
Looks like you paid $85 for an xf45 3 cent silver 1851 (Philadelphia according to the description but New Orleans per the picture - HUGE difference). Is that total out of pocket costs (shipping, taxes, fees)? If Philadelphia then it is a decent price (not necessarily a steal but good) imho. If New Orleans - wow great deal! I want it...I am desperately looking for one!
I agree, it's an O and should have gone in the $200-220 range. Nice score. NGC may the older it for free if you point out the mistake.
I meant to say $141 is what you paid. If it is indeed a New Orleans...good deal! If it's Philadelphia, then not so good.
No, I paid $141(120+buyer premium). There will probably be about $10 shipping so about $150. Based on the "O" I went for it. I found the label error intriguing so what the heck. The only reason I even looked at it is I saw it at $20 for an XF45 earlier today. I then noticed the "O" and ran the bidding up past the other autobids and it stuck at $120 the rest of day through the action.
And I did use the NGC cert verification to confirm the reverse picture did belong to that coin. And the pic at NGC also shows the "O" so I'm confident it's not a Philly.
It's a tough call on the value. Heritage lists the current value of a 1851-O in XF45 as $175. That price is off their spread sheet program which they update once a month. There were two XF45 coins in 2011 that sold for more, $212 and $195. There was another at $94 but it was scratched and it was ANACS. Only one XF40 since then. All the rest have been higher grades. The 5th Professional Edition of the Red Book shows the XF40 at $175. The $200+ range is found in AU. At $141 plus shipping, you didn't do badly. It appears your slightly under market for the grade. :>)
Nice pickup I'd send it in to ngc and have them re holder a classic case of buy the coin not the holder!
It seems that once upon a time, NGC was having a really bad time with 1851Os. 3770248-007 is another 1851O labeled as 1851. Not as good a score as yours (the VF money isn't THAT different), however I did cherry-pick it from a dealer WHILE having a discussion about another dealer who had a mislabeled Franklin he wanted major error money for... and never letting on that the 1851 he was selling me was similarly mislabeled.
