NGC has graded approximately 417 1996 D Lincoln Memorials with 89 graded MS68RD and this lone example in MS68RD Proof Like with none graded higher
Very nice. If the none proof like MS68 is estimated at $85 per NGC, what's your estimate of the proof like version?
Yes. I have been fortunate to establish a buyer relationship with an individual who picks thousands of mint sets to come up with some of the top graded coins of all denominations
At this time I am sure what I paid would be considered over list. If you look at my 59-Date set you can see that I have tried to add the top pop coins. Over time, since most proof like coins are hard to come by, I think this coin will pay off. Hard to give an amount of what it would be listed at now
I believe that's one with a scarcer reverse that accounts for less than 3% of mintage. Most of these scarcer versions are PL especially on the reverse. The letters appear to be much smaller and farther from the top. For some reason the experts haven't provided an opinion on it. To my knowledge it exists only in mint sets. I've heard various theories on possible causes but no official opinion has been rendered so far as I know. Nice coin.
What is the scarcer reverse you refer to? Unless it slipped my mind, I am unaware of the variety. None stand out on variety vista http://www.varietyvista.com/Lincoln Cent RDV Changes.htm
Compare this one to another '96-D. You'll see the tops of the letters are thinner and further from the rim on this one. It's a pretty dramatic difference.
I'm still not all the way unpacked from moving; is this listed in the CPG? Or, could you please link to a side by side comparison?
First time I've posted a picture here! Again though, some believe this is a strike effect but no one who has said this has seen one and it isn't listed. I lack the expertise to be sure but I believe it is actually a different die. In any case though a lot of the PL '96-D's from mint sets will be like the much scarcer lower version.
That's a stunner! Awesome, rare and very much under-appreciated....someday the collecting world will catch-up on the Memorial cents.
The memorials are vastly underappreciated. Millions collect the older cents but most collections simply end at 1959 or 1964. Everyone just thinks the later dates are too common to bother with. A lot of dates are anything but common in Gem and PL's can be a sight to behold. I doubt anyone will attribute the far-S at this time. Keep your eye open for '96 mint sets though since these are out there.
Is this the difference between "reverse design 6" and "reverse design 7" as mentioned on page 43 of The Authoritative Reference On Lincoln Cents? It compares e pluribus Unum in the photos. It also mentions that design 6 has fatter letters and was for 89-92 p,d, proof as well as 94-2008 proof; whereas design 7 is described as having thinner lettering, and used in 93 for p,d, proof as well as 94-2008 p,d..... So this is a transitional variety very much akin to CAM/WAM? Doesn't make too much sense as the transition was made in 94, and not again until 2009...
