    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

    hi guys (and girl),

i can usually attribute my ancient coins using online sources, but this one is giving me trouble. its a little provincial bargain bin coin i picked up the other day.

sellers pics are better than mine, so i'll just use his.

it was sold as a marcus aurelius, could be commodus...maybe even septimus severus.

here's a similar coin from thyateira, but is a large sestertius. mine is only 22 mm and 4.6 g. similar coins i've found from commodus are also large coins.

    any ideas? thanks in advance!

    TIF Always learning.

    It's a challenge...

I do think it's Marcus Aurelius though. The inscription is similar to the obverse legends on his Alexandrian coins.

What I see on your obverse:

    AVTKAIM AVPHANT

Using Emmett's translation of Alexandrian abbreviations, my best guess is:

    AVT(OKPATΩP) KAI(CAP) M(APKOC) AVPH(ΛIOC) ANT(ωNINOC)
    Imperator Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

In hand, can you make out any of the reverse legend? That's going to be the money shot for place of issue.
