Hello, I'm currently on deployment at sea and have been looking to finish my 7070 Dansco album. I only have two coins left - one of which is the 1840-65 Seated silver dollar. I found and purchased the attached coin from Great Collections auctions and my wife just sent me pictures. Typically I don't like to break out PCGS or NGC high dollar coins to put in my 7070 so I thought this ICG coin would be perfect. It was graded at EF45 but not sure the shield grades at that. The head looks to grade a little higher, but I'm no expert. I didn't notice the small little nicks on the 4 o'clock reverse and 2 o'clock on the obverse. Maybe it is the same hole - maybe filled? Looking for some advice. I love the coin and it will go well into my 7070 set but does it have any troubles I should be concerned about. Hate to send it back without seeing it, but no option since I'm on deployment. Someone bid me up to $510 for it, so not sure how I did on the money side. Thanks in advance for your help.
Always good to see other service members here! I'm active duty Air Force. I'm no expert, others here are and hopefully they'll chime in. Those nicks look like a possible filled hole to me, and if I were buying it I would be concerned. Also the coin looks cleaned to me though I admit it could be the photos. I'm thinking over dipped. Not sure if that's an issue for you or not. If were you and I had doubts about it, I would send it back and keep on the hunt for another one. Good luck with the deployment!
Thanks! 3 months in - 6 more to go. Navy deployments are getting too long! There is another nick near the D of United on the Reverse so maybe the other two are just nicks? The one on the back is closer to the rim than the one on the front so if it was a drill through it would have been at an angle. Plus, not sure if the two meet at the same point. If it was a fill it was a bad fill job. ) I want to get this one right because for the money, it will be hard to get a decent 1840-65 type example that fits nicely in with the rest of the coins in the 7070. Any other opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks...and thanks Jwt708 for your Service also.
I would send it back and wait for a better grade. yes these seated dollars are expensive, but it's a very cool coin. rare too. I do not know a coin collector that does not like seated coins. Wait for other experts to give you more sound advice about this coin. thank you for your service to our country. what is the other coin you need for your type set ?
my late coin dealer told me and this other girl Jennifer that we should both buy seated dollars about 10 years ago. we looked at him and said ha! what do you think we are made of money ? nope. they were about $300 back then... now off the charts expensive. $500-1,000+ we should have listened to him but we both did not have that kind of money for just 1 coin. a nice eye appealing seated dollar will never go out of style and will only go up in value. happy coin hunting to you. be safe out there.
I would keep it. My only seated dollar is a PCGS XF40 and yours has clearly better details than mine.
I have to say, the obverse marks are distracting, but I rather like the coin. I don't think you did too bad at ~$500.
The marks do not bother me and I think they are rather innocent gouges. The surfaces, however, appear completely unoriginal and I do not like the look of the coin overall.
I'm just about a year into coin collecting, so take this for what it's worth ;-) I have absolutely *no* patience and always want to buy the first coin that is close to acceptable. GDJMSP and others are trying (with some success) to break me of this habit. My question: will it cost anything (other than shipping) to send it back? My advice: see if she can take some clearer photos. Ideally, you'd have it "in hand" to make the decision, but better pics might help. If you *love* the coin, then keep it. I've been on the hunt for a Seated Dollar for a few months now, and apparently they're not the easiest coins to find (problem-free and in my price range). Did you try Heritage? Look at closed auctions; many nice looking coins there have gone for a good bit less than $500 in the past few weeks. Did you try geekpryde's "Master List"? I've found quite a few Seated Dollars on those sights, but none that I bought. I will PM you a few ideas. Thanks for serving our country.
Thank you all for the fantastic advice. I checked and I can return it if the wife calls today. I'm completely torn. I agree it probably has issues and I'm assuming that Tom B feels the surface was cleaned at some point - thank you for the expert read. I'm torn because getting a coin that is completely problem free isn't going to be this cheap and this is about all that I can afford. I think it would go nice with the other coins in the 7070 but I also don't want a extremely troubled coin. I do greatly appreciate the help. I'm just not sure what to do. For Spirityoda - unfortunately I don't have any pictures with me on the ship of the 7070 but wish I did. Thanks!
"Deployment". There's a word I haven't used in a while. Over 20 years out from my own career, but made every USN deployment there is on anything from submarines to "gator freighters" to "birdfarms". God bless you!
if you are questioning it now......seems to me you will not be happy with it later. I would return it and save up for a problem free coin. yes it might cost $200-500 more but in the end you will be much happier with it. I understand buying what you can afford, but if your goal is to have a better type set. if you keep that coin you can always upgrade later on.
I'd return it as it looks cleaned . BTW Thanks a million for you service to our country , God Bless !!!!!
If the ICG pics are the actual coin , I'm surprised it even graded . A worn coin should never be dipped . Send her back .
I agree, looks very cleaned, but I think you paid the right price for it. To all of you who so unselfishly sacrifice for the greater good of so many that you have never met, I'd like to thank you for your service, I consider you guys my heroes. God speed your safe return and happy Veterans Day.
Ok, thread hijack here...dang @Kirkuleez...as someone who has been at it for a while now it still always means a lot to me to "hear" that. Really. To echo his sentiment, I think of everyone who went before me and appreciate the sacrifices that were and still are made.
You can contact @coinaddict1795, he has a raw one for sale in the WTS section. No photos were shown, so I can't comment on his asking price.
