I wonder what material make-up would have turned this coin copper.

Based only upon the photos, I don't have an answer for you. Here is a photo of a coin with similar appearance:

 

Thanks Rick. I'm not sure of the weight as this is an old photo that I was experimenting with. I do have the coin, all I have to do is find it.

 

Looks to me like it had been in the ground at one time. Metal detector find maybe?

 

Nope, at least not while I have had it. I don't do metal detecting, but kinda wish I did. Good detectors are to expensive for me.
