Meaning of Accented is: Mark showing such emphasis or "INDICATING PRONUNCIATION ". There's no question about that, Jacqueline Kennedy didn't like this kind of Accented. Who can likes his head showing something like that? Any comments... "welcome".
That's not an Accented Hair variety. Look here: http://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/kennedy-half-dollar-die-varieties/1964-accent-hair-50c-3121
Full Definition of ACCENT transitive verb 1 a : to pronounce with accent : stress b : to mark with a written or printed accent 2 : to give prominence to : make more prominent
In my opinion. This is the REAL, REAL REASON. why Jacky was very angry. "believe me" It's funny to see the Hair pronunciation showing in this coin.
I'm using THE WEBSTER'S NEW WORL DICTIONARY of the American Language. Second Edition; page 4. Ac-cent 1- emphasis given a spoken syllable or word. 2- a mark showing such emphasis or INDICATING PRONUNCIATION. 3- a distinguishing manner of pronouncing/an Irish accent. 4- Special emphasis or attention.
From the Oxford English Dictionary: III. In contexts not relating to sound. 9. Distinction; a distinguishing mark, character, or tone; distinctive force, sharpness, prominence, or intensity; (esp. with on) emphasis, stress. http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/989?rskey=Z1sn92&result=1#eid
Any way. My point is that. In the image on file about Accented Hair. Do you see something disgusting or funny? What in reality Mrs. Kennedy didn't like? But; if you see with your self eyes the one is in this post, you will laugh. (I'm talking about the first 2 images in this post).
When you see this Half Kennedy, you think about a Porcupine. That is my point. The very, very, very original problem with this design was this hair going out and up. But also I have the feeling all the coins made like this one were pulled back and destroyed.
I don't see or think of a porcupine at all. I see die scratches or gouges. I doubt very much that coins with that die damage were fished out and destroyed by the mint and that you might have the only one that was missed. PS. That was NOT the thing that displeased Jackie.
That looks more like small gouges inside the lower loop of the "B" rather than hair. I think your conclusion is all "moussed up". Chris
The coin is almost New-uncirculated. And protected inside of a plastic bag. It's impossible to get scratches "inside" of that south-hole portion of the letter B. But any way. Some time we got to understand; from a picture we can't have 100% information of the reality. Beside that. SOMETHING LIKE RELIGION. When a mind is closed. Is closed. and no matter what others can said.
I didn't say the coin was scratched. I said the die used to strike your coin was scratched. So, only those that agree with you have an open mind?
Sorry Rick by the miss-understanding. I mean, FOR ME the idea of the original design was A LITTLE CRAZY HAIR; like mine. Specially above my forehead all time my hair is pointing to the clouds. Scratches on the die?... may be.
Wow. Here we go again. Some folks just do not have a clue on what constitutes the Accented Hair Variety and the fact that it ONLY appeared on Proof coins. It's quite simple regardless of the why. The Variety has a different design and a numismatic degree is not required.
If this was caused by DIE SCRATCHES OR GOUGES. Then somebody else, may be has other or others 1964 Half Kennedy showing the same alteration in that area. Do you think this is an alteration without any significance?
The wishbone shape is in there. The "V" above the Ear is in there. On the reverse The Ray has 4 broken spots. And the "G" appear without any serif. MAYBE "IT'S NOT THE VARIETY". But can be AN ERROR any way. About "the Horns"; there's no history o picture showing those yet. (what you said "scratch on the Die")
