Last night I discovered something by accident. I'm saving the best specimens of State Quarters and keeping them in two-by-twos. Eventually, I will secure them in some kind of display. However, I have a second level of State Quarters that I'm keeping, at least temporarily, unprotected. I may spend them eventually. But they are very close to the conditions of those I have stapled away. Last night I had been fooling around with these loose and placed them along the top of my computer keyboard--for no good reason Later, as I was cruising the 'Net, visiting Coin Talk and all, I noticed that the coins I had put on the keyboard were very visible to me. The overhead light was just right. I could glance from the computer screen down to the keyboard and enjoy the coins, which were in high relief from the light, then return my gaze to the screen. It was very enjoyable. So I just thought I would pass on the suggestion: place some unsecured coins on your keyboard and keep them there while you use your computer. Look down once in a while and enjoy some of your pieces.
Good suggestion gunsmoke. I always keep some of my circulated Walkers and Morgans laying by my computer, or my favorite chair to sit in and read. Its always nice to stay in touch with your collection.
Obviously you don't live around here in the Chicago area. Leaving even a cent laying around is not smart. No one I know puts any coins on display. You would just love the stores with bars on the windows and doors. I know of one neighbor that used to brag about having a coin collection. Naturally he was robbed and ended up in a hospital. So if you live in an area where you can display coins, you are really lucky or just smarter than me.
I just keep about 6 worn coins around to play with, which isn't really such an incredible danger in a rural area of Missouri. All the good stuff is in the bank.
I'm smarter than you. I know that nobody can see through walls, except Superman, and he lives in Gotham City. When I lay the coins on my keyboard, no one can see them except me. There is not the slightest danger in doing what I do. Nobody would have any reason to suspect that I collect coins, and if they did, and broke in, they wouldn't get much. Furthermore, what they would get would come in the form of hot lead.
The way things usually work is when you display anything of the slightest of values and a good freind or even a relative sees it, they may innocently mention it to someone and the amount and value grows a little. Then they tell someone who tells someone that tells someone and each time the amount grows and grows. Eventually someone breaks in for what they thought was a fortune. This is one of the reasons so many times you hear of a breakin for a few dollars only. Phone calls when there is no one there, a car sitting on your street with someone in it for no reason at all, an advertisement placed on your front porch and no one elses are just a few of the way they can tell when someone is at home. There are lots more and you learn them when you live in an area where this happens all the time. The worst part of this is when a crook makes a mistake and there is someone home and then there are some horrible results for just a few dollars. Be carefull with what you have.
That's very well expressed and no doubt you are right in general. But I live alone and I never talk about my coin collection.
This thread brings up something that I've been thinking about recently that I find to be so unfortunate: that the possibility theft dictates that we, as coin collectors, are not able to have our coins around to enjoy them, and that we can't share about our collections with anybody. For example, I have an american eagle $5 gold piece (1/10th ounce) that I got from my dad for my birthday about 15 years ago that I almost never get to look at or enjoy because it's in the safety deposit box. Most of the time I forget I even have it.
you wanna know another part to enjoying your coins while on CoinTalk? Put your coins on the keyboard and listen to the music.......I listen to this while on cointalk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkT-9U4p0c0
I collect shiny pennies, mostly from 2003 to 2006. I keep them in an ashtray on my computer desk to fidget with. I also stack them: http://www.fincher.org/Misc/Pennies/ I've made some cool things.
That is awesome Royall! I don't have enough balance or poise to dosomething like that. In general, I'm a clutz. lol Nice work. Phoenix
Royall, Hey are you the guy who does the Coinstar commercials. Lets see a shoe and a pair of headphones! I think I might have to try a bridge. Mattman
