What are the options for taking decent photos of coins?

When selling a coin I have fumbled around with using a hand held camera and used this photo for posting a coin for sale. If I want to produce a better looking and consistent photo what are the popular choices available?

You can take perfectly acceptable photos with your cell phone. The whole key is getting the phone perfectly still when you snap the photo. Man I am the least knowledgeable photog on this site and take pics like the one below all the time. I just lay my phone down on a can so it is perfectly still.

A soup can works in regular mode below (books) is for macro mode, but this is the basic idea...

If you really want to learn how to take top-quality coin pictures, acquire a copy of the book "Numismatic Photography" by Mark Goodman. The best investment you can make.

Watch this video. It's over 10 years old, but the techniques are relevant. I discuss using a cheap setup of a point-and-shoot camera, tripod, and a couple desk lamps.

My photos have improved tremendously since I started using this technique. I now can usually get a focused decent picture with enough snaps. I highly recommend it!
