Me I bought raw and local for years and did get some nice coins but things like a flowing hair dollar proof trade and rainbow toned Morgans just never showed up at any price
Isn't doug the guy telling us all the time about buying the coin not the plastic? Isn't buying sight unseen relying solely on plastic.
What I do not like on ebay, is that when you bid, sometimes you feel that you have won, because I wait till just a very few seconds to the end to bid, but then see the results, and find out that the one that won, was not shown to been biding on the look sheet at all, even the hidden bids. Some times, I feel like it's has the owner biding also. What do you think?
No, but I stopped collecting 1992 thru 2006. School, Kids, Wives, Work, etc. I wouldn't have gotten back in in 2006 if quality TPG and quality online dealers weren't available, along with eBay.
You're not the only one waiting until the last few seconds to bid. Sometimes, you're the high bidder; sometimes, someone else is. More than one can play the sniping game.
With all the venues available for selling coins with photos, wouldn't it make sense to sell coins on the sight unseen network only if the coin really was junk for the grade? I would be afraid of it becoming a dumping ground...
Interesting post by a well known Maine Dealer that I speak with, and who @Mainebill does some business with: Gerry Fortin http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/DailyBlog.htm (emphasis mine) Greetings from Baltimore! I arrived fairly early yesterday and after checking GFRC inventory into Whitman security, took in the Stack's auction preview. Focus was on bust and seated offerings during lot viewing. I don't know how to say this in a manner that is political correct....I was completely disgusted with many of the Seated coins in PCGS holder. I'm not speaking about 1-2 random coins but rather the majority of the Seated quarter and and some of the Seated half dollars. These were not marginal coins but obviously cleaned bright pieces that had no reason to be certified by PCGS. All were in new holders. Rich Uhrich was sitting next to me at the Stack's preview and had the same opinion. We went to dinner and wondered who submitted these piece to PCGS as obviously if GFRC submitted them, they would be returned in Details, Cleaned holders..... Today's observations reinforces my decision to move away from PCGS and towards NGC. Current PCGS grading on circulated seated material is all over the place and the Stack's lot viewing took their variance to a new level. This can be so confusing to new collectors entering the marketing and reinforces the need to work with a trusted dealer. Today, I am submitting several pieces from the Maine Collection to NGC for show grading. Kind of what a few people have been getting at about PCGS in this thread and others.
Well, that figures. Hadn't bought a coin on Ebay for a long time. Then, last week a coin came up and I did a best offer thing and the seller accepted. Been looking for this coin for about 2 years. Got it in last night and it had a stain on it that didn't show in the sellers photos nor was it in the written description. I'm sending it back today for a refund. When I get my money back I'll just keep it for coin shows and just buy coins that I can see in hand. No more Ebay with edited photos.
They are both, sight seen and sight unseen. The choice is yours. http://www.certifiedcoinexchange.com/tour/ edit - Every coin you've ever bought Vic has gone through a dealer's hands before you bought it. Which would rather be - the guy who buys it direct, or the guy who buys it 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, down the line ?
Well, it seems like someone here has been telling us that you should find a trusted dealer, establish a relationship, and then count on that trusted dealer as at least one step in the chain.
Agreed! The dealers that I've done business with I've had great experiences with all but one are ct members and the one that isn't is the previous mentioned Gerry Fortin. I can say ct dealer members lostdutchman Amanda Varner Tom B usmoneylover carboni7e were all a pleasure to do business with professional and I love the coins I bought from them I'd highly recommend all
Which is why Vic I'm surprised your not haunting ha stacks and the other non feebay auctions. Yes you have a lot of competition especially from the dealers but a greater selection of quality coins then you'll ever find on feebay
Yes I have, and I will continue to do so. Especially for those who have no wish to ever use something like the dealer networks. But those same dealers that you form a relationship with, well they just happen to also use the electronic dealer networks, as pretty much every dealer does. And you can establish that relationship on the electronic dealer networks, or deal with those dealers that you already have relationships with, on the networks as well. And get coins at much better prices to boot Any way you want to look at it, it's a win-win !
My 2 cent piece: I will ALWAYS buy the coin....not the holder. You've gotta be able to grade and be confident in your abilities I think. I've done pretty good on buying raw, and sending them in. But I prefer to have raw coins. And I like NGC over PCGS any day. I also like eBay. Just gotta have good pics to look at.
Thanks for the kind words Bill. While I have made the mistake of concerning myself with the site itself more than once I have yet to have any problems in buying or selling with anyone here on CoinTalk. This fact is the reason why I prefer to sell coins here as opposed to eBay.
