I have noticed something a little strange in the last month or so. When the subject of the new presidential dollars first came up people were luke warm at best to the Idea of them. Many people said they would not collect them and that it was a waste for the mint to have this program. Even the coin mags had little good to say about them. We still don't know if they will circulate,(probably not).
Now.....that the coins are out, people seem to be accepting them quite well. Three banks I have been to have sold out and had to order more. I haven't counted all the threads here, but there have been a lot. Threads with questions, threads about errors, threads about pictures, where to get them, how to store them, it's amazing. What happened to all the people here that weren't Interested in these new coins?;)

Perhaps they've been converted over to the idea of a $1 coin. The Presidential Dollars will teach people (not just Americans,I must add!) about who the Presidents of America have been & in what order they served.

hoarding, people will buy them and hoard them until they realize, that a) they have no additional value and b) they have no real use for them still being able to get dollar bills, then they'll get returned to banks and in 3 or 4 years the only way you'll get the dollar coins is through the mint.

One advantage that I see to hanging onto a lot of them right now is in case an error like the Wisconsin leaf error shows up.

I thought the edge lettering orientation was an error, till I found out otherwise! The reverse
is pretty cool, and the obverse portrait looks good. BTW I picked up my first Montana 1/4
this evening. Nice strike but the motif is uninteresting.

I was one of those. Thought it was bunk, and wasn't interested all that much. Now that one's out, it's interesting to see and have and show around. As someone else at work said (who is a coin collector to some degree, mostly proof sets)... he's not collecting these as he thinks he might be dead before he completes the entire set. 2016 seems pretty far off, heh.

I went to the bank and managed to get... *two* not rolls... single coins heh. I wanted six rolls to give out to the kids at school (I teach), but sadly they'll have to settle at looking at one of my two coins.

The state quarters have been a huge success, only time will tell if the Prez dollars will become a circulating coin. I have my doubts however, halfs don't even circulate. Another thing going against the Prez is the color, simply because it doesn't hold up; look at the Sacs - kinda ugly after the color changes. Thanks, Douglas

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that I have found an error. What I meant is that if an error is found, it would be good to have a load of the new dollars already on hand to go through.

I have not converted, the pres dollar was a bad idea if the mint wont's to make a new dollar then make it silver and the size of a morgan dollar. How we have another dollar coin the size of a quarter bad deal all around at least that is the way it seems to me.

Bruce, the price of silver in the old silver $1 coins is worth more than $1 alone. As for a silver $1,the U.S. Mints do strike them, but only as commemorative medal-coins.

    Aidan,
Yes I know that, I was just giving my opinion on how I think the mint has gone down the tubes.

    ND86,

Your statement is correct, I should have made myself more clear in my post about the mint, first of all there costomer service is in need of a major overhaul and as far as the pres dollar goes this coin will never make it in circulation it will hoarded. The only way any dollar coin will make it in circulation in my opinion is to stop making paper money and that is not going to happen. And as for it being a collectible coin yes it will be however they will be from unc rolls not from circulation because they will be hoarded at least that is the way it seems to me.

I have always respected valued your opinion so we will see overtime if this works I just wish they were the same size as a morgan dollar or Kennedy half.

I think that size would absolutely ensure that they'd never circulate (which, in theory is what these are, circulating dollar coins). Mind you, I'd love to see something that size as well... gimme a Morgan sized dollar! Not that I'd ever carry more than one or two of those suckers in my pocket. Note, they have issued dollars of that size for collectors, so it's been done (OK, so maybe you want something that's not .999 silver and costs $30). But anyhow, that's simply not the motivation of these.

I can't see these ever circulating. I buy a lot of dollar coins, a couple of hundred every week for use in circulation and I give them to the kids for allowance. And the Sacs are generally in circulated condition and they circulate easily. OTOH, I can't find a single Presidential coin yet and the banks have refused to get them. They are still born already.

The only way a dollar coin circulates is either the end of the dollar bill, (goodbye and good ridence) or if them make a dollar coin about the size of a dime and which is real silver.

Sure, and while they're at it... bring back the 1/2 cent.

Ruben,a Dime-sized $1 coin will be easily confused with the Dime in the same way that the Susan B. Anthony $1 is confused with the Quarter.I don't think that idea would work.
