I found a 1972 Kennedy Half with a golden tone and it sounds different from the other two. I was wondering if it could be silver. Does any one know about this.
I'm sorry to say this, but no. Kennedy Half Dollars were first issued in 1964 with a 90% silver composition, but that was changed to only 40% from 1965 to 1970. For 1972 it would have to be clad. They were struck in 90% silver again for the 1992 to present Silver Proof Sets, but they didn't have those in 72 :-(
I was going to say - I don't know what the metal composition will be in the year 2972, or the likelihood that coins will still be circulating.
Could it be an error because I don't see the copper sandwiched between the silver? I am a novice so be nice.
I'm too much of an optimist to rule that out, but if the coin is silver it would be the only one known to exist. So the odds aren't very good Some clear, close-up pictures would help us, or you might want to take it to a local coin shop for in-depth review.
For whatever reason, I see lots of gold-flashed 1972 Kennedy halves, more so than other dates. If the coin has been plated, that would over up the usually obvious evidence of a copper core on the rim. This could be why you're not seeing it. That, or it's a one-of-a-kind rarity. But I wouldn't get your hopes up.
Thank you so much then maybe this indian head buffalo nickel belt buckle isn't worth any thing either.
there were a few 1971-D and 1977-D halves struck in 40% silver by error, but not in 1972. 90% silver kennedy halves were made only in 1964, 40% silver from 1965 to 1970 and 1976S, and 90% proofs have been made every year since 1992.
