I have a 1988 dollar that has George Washington smudged. How does the printing process work with paper money? I assume its layered because the rest of the bill looks correct. What value does this add to the bill?

Someone (not the government) was attempting to print a new portrait over George and didn't quite finish the job. It's an incomplete fantasy note -- no added value.

After further exam the smudged area is not a smudge but a very nicely placed sticker of Santa. Someone in 1988 must have really been into holiday decoration.

I found this with a stash of coins while cleaning out my grandmothers house. She must have thought it was of some value.

    Thanks for the reply's.

I received a few of these as a kid in the 80's. Santa picture was glued to george. Someone tried peeling him off.
