Silvertowne is at all major shows.

Yes. But I think walk-thru grading at the show is something $100 per coin. And few coins are worth the extra expense for most folks.

Oh wow! I thought instead of the usual $25-30 it would be like $50. I have not researched it whatsoever, but was only guessing. I don't think $100 is worth it. My logic was that with only a few coins, the extra cost per coin is made up by not having to pay shipping/insurance, plus as a bonus I get my coins back same day.

Okay I have a question about these fees. When it says things like 5-coin minimum, is that 5 coins of the same level? For example, let's say I have 1 gold coin to get graded and let's say some early copper, a trade dollar, etc. For gold it says 10-coin minimum (under show services). Does that have to be 10 gold coins at that service or just 10 coins total? Would that early copper and trade dollar count towards that 10 coin minimum?

That is for the Show Economy and as I understand it you can mix and match in that tier since you are paying $65 per coin. But yes you do have to submit 5 coins minimum. If you don't have 5 coins to submit then you must use the Show tier or Show Express tier.

Under the Show Gold tier yes all 10 coins have to be gold. You are getting the discount to $45 per coin because you are submitting 10 coins.

Now under their regular services, not the show services, you cannot always mix and match coins. You have to follow the guidelines provided on that page. For example, if you want to use the Economy tier then there can be no gold coins in your submission.

And as I understand it you cannot combine different tiers on the same invoice. You have to have a separate invoice for each tier you are using. Like the coins you mentioned above, the gold coin would have to be submitted on 1 invoice under the Regular tier. And the Trade dollar and early copper could be submitted on a separate invoice under either the Regular tier, or the Economy tier. Depending on how long you were willing to wait for the coins.

And you also have to understand what they mean by "days". You see, Saturdays and Sundays don't count as days, ever. And show days don't count as days either. In other words if PCGS is attending a show anywhere, then the days they are at that show are treated just like Saturdays and Sundays. There are always at least 8, and sometimes 9 or 10 Sat./Sun. in a month. And if they are also doing a show that month, then there be 4 or 5 more off days added in the month. So you could potentially have 15 days in a given month that don't count as "days". And if they are doing 2 shows that month, you have 20 days that don't count in that 1 month.

So that 20-30 days they mention, it might easily be 60 days in reality.

And if they get backed up because they are busy then they get backed up. And the delivery time increases. In the past I have seen coins take 2 or 3 months to get graded and returned to their owners. And that is not uncommon. In the early days it would even sometimes take 6 months.

Wow that is an incredibly long time. I do not "need" the coins back for anything, but like everybody else sooner is better than later. Thank you for explaining everything about the submission process and answering the questions I had.

Which is the best Baltimore show to attend? Summer? Spring? Winter?

I just realized that the Summer show is in line with my birthday, so we may take a trip up there.

Baltimore is a known coin town , yes I'm sure as volume goes there are bigger shows. But coins have a huge history here. All 3 shows are good as they draw from all over. When the World's Fair of Money was here the convention center was packed! You can't go wrong any of the 3 shows. I do suggest a Friday or Saturday visit. By late Saturday and mid day Sunday the dealers are heading out.
They need to catch a flight or drive a long way. So they tend depending on their schedule ,and how well they are doing at the show head out.
Do some research on coins in Baltimore you'll be in for some fun facts and stories.
I can't recall the date sometime in the 1930's some young boys were in a run down row home. They were being boys and started to kick holes in the plaster . Then they found a huge stash of gold coins. Remember 1930's gold was what 30-35 @ oz. But after all the up roar the boys were given the coins.
Another reason could be the Baltimore is centrally located on the right coast. Making it a great spot for a show.
