My wife got me this coin for Christmas last year, and I have been having a tough time trying to verify it's value listed. Can anyone confirm the coin gradings or direct me to where I can get it? I cannot located this particular grading in my coin book and magazines. It might be an error coin too because it looks like the "E" in E Pluribus Unum" is very lightly stamped in, not much raised. Thanks for any information, I have attached some photos. Jay
Hello Jay and welcome The 1983 Double Die Reverse which is what the DDR stands for. The red book lists that coin in a MS-65 at 300.00 Pcgs lists it at a 67 Red at 2000.00 ,I notice that the coin is not slabbed or graded by an outside grading company such as NGC or PCGS ,, and you say that is weak on the E ,, which could be the result of a few things but my opinion is that it would be tough to pull a 67 grade on a coin with a weak strike or a polished die strike,,, so the prices are ball park, it may be worth sending in for certification if your so inclined.
Hello again Jay By the way ,the doubling on that coin is in the ONE CENT on the reverse, check it out under a little magnification . Rick
Well, thanks for the information. I have recently become a coin collector and trying to get all my resources in place. Would you happen to know how and where to send in a coin for certification? I don't know if I want to drop this in the mail for anyone to claim as their own?? Is the "redbook" that I see referred to available online anywhere? Thanks, Jay
Hi Jay The Redbook ais available for ourchase at most book stores as well as Wal Mart here carries them, relatively inexpensive I think around $10.00 As for coin submission check out the PCGS website at http://www.pcgs.com/ They have a coin submission area, as well as several different levels of Membership, one of them being a free membership, but as with most things the more it costs the better the service .
Howdy Jay - Welcome to the Forum !! I'm afraid that based on the pics, anyone is going to have a hard time either grading that coin or even confirming that it is an '83 DDR. That being said - I can give you some rough ideas of value for the coin in a MS67 Red grade - aprox $700. But that is not to say you could actually sell the coin for that much. There is a MS65 Red graded by NGC that has been available on ebay for 10 days now - priced at $500. It has not even received 1 bid.
GDJMSP is correct, realized value as opposed to book or listed value can sometimes be substantially different, Based on the info given ,,which appears to be what the coin was bought under by your wife MS-67 DDR RED,,,without knowing what was paid,, the last known realised value would be the amount that she paid for it . How that value will reconcile with what could be realised by your sale of the coin in a graded state will vary again and change the realised value to that known value. as for using Ebay as a barometer of realised value ,I suppose a person could .
