Santa Claus is in Shanghai, and he's creating spark erosion counterfeits for all the good little boys and girls!

 

Lots and lots of trae dollars were sent to the Orient, that is why they were made in the first place. Unfortunately, this made them good candidates for counterfieting.

 

I understand that. All I was making a sarcastic reference to is that, in order to have as many "uncirculated" and high quality specimens as are being offered for sale from the orient, many more would have had to have been minted. These were minted for commerce and most of them have been counterstamped in some way. Realistically, the number of those in very high grade conditions is very limited compared to those that are being sold as genuine.

 

Suffice it to say that it gives a new perspective to "getting Shanghaied"...

I got defrauded in march by e-temptations
The vendor had only bad comments that he delivered late
Turns out the guy was selling silver eagles by the tube of 20
eagles he did not have and then later bought the eagles by the box
Unlucky for me the price of silver shot up and I never received my eagles ( Loss of 523 dollars for 60 eagles )
What ebay is concerned you first have to ask for address and details and contact the vendor directly
Then you have I think 30 days to file for probable problem
Then you have another 30 days ( 60 total ) to file for the purchaser protection program ( and if you are lucky you may get some money back like 200 dollars ) and since they delisted this guy allready do not expect any further help

After 6 months I got contacted by the local police ( Pawcatuck CT ) to reafirm I was still defrauded

Thanks for the information! I am certainly sympathetic to your situation. I hope that all turns out well for you in the long run. . . but what a headache

I filed a claim with Paypal immediately and it looks like they have reveresed the charges because I have not yet received the merchandise. The seller has contacted me several times to cancel the claim but Paypal advised me to wait until I received the merchandise. So... we'll see.

Your eyes must be better than mine. Kind of hard to go wrong at $3 though

 

Looks like a mint mark to me, or else a very conveniently placed mark on the coin. My back hurts frequently and my hair has fallen out with age, but my eyes are still 20/15.

It's worth a gamble for less than three bucks based on what looks like a mintmark there. If you're wrong, you're out a buck or two compared to market value. But if you're right...

I wonder if they aren't communicating with you because someone tipped them off that it looks like there's a mintmark and thus worth a LOT more than it sold for. Also, they noted the coin in "fair" condition, which tells me they know little about coins because this coin is easily G-4; the rims are full and the coin looks very clean and problem-free for the grade.

You might have "hit the die on the coin"--someone might have e-mailed and told them not to sell--Oh well--they have my $3 and if they don't want bad feed-back they will send the coin or my money!!!

I really didn't pay close enough attention to see that my thread was still going on lol, anywho, this was about 3 weeks ago that this happened, I did not have the money to purchase it, but, I had seen something that I don't think very many people paid attention to, it was an auction for a 1909 S wheat penny, now, the thing about this is, is that on the reverse, I could clearly see a V.D.B. Now one thing to confirm that at least a couple of other people saw this, was the fact that it sold for around 180.00, in F-12 condition. One thing I have been curious about, was if the buyer actually got a 1909 S VDB in Fine condition for 180 bucks... Anything is possible I suppose. OH! and back on topic now, my recent purchase was for an 1856 Seated liberty quarter in EF condition for 13.50, that includes shipping costs, nice original piece, there is a small rim nick at 2:00, but, overall, I think I got a good deal... Man, there are a lot of type coins right now that just aren't doing so hot, here is what I have been seeing not doing so well, and this applies to all grades even mint state coins. Barber dimes, barber quarters, seated half dimes, mercury dimes, seated dimes, seated quarters. I watched a very nicely toned seated dime that looked like a strong ms-63 go for little over 100.00, regardless of date, that to me was a major steal.

 

From what little I know about Ebay, it seems that quite a few sellers use "shop" photos for their auctions. Now of course this isn't limited to Ebay as I am aware of many dealers using this technique. I have been watching a few of the TYPE coins mentioned going for far less than most dealers are paying for them. Seems like you regulars are letting some good money makers slip through your fingers.

 

Believe me ND, i'm trying to snag them all up, but, money isn't like it was 3 months ago for me...
