I know the pictures aren't the best but there is a major die crack at the lower right of the memorial building and you can see Abe's figure on the reveres. You can also see the Y in Liberty. It appears that you can make out most, not all of the front, on the reverse.
I know it's a very weak picture. Can I take it to a dealer and have them take pictures of it? Believe me though, the errors are there.
I'd be surprised if any dealer would do it for free, and I don't think it would be worth the cost. Chris
1983's are ripe with die cracks and clashes I believe. I think it has something to do with them switching from the copper to the zinc planchets the year before. It took them awhile to get it right. I agree with cpm9ball, it wouldn't be worth it to take it anywhere to have pictures taken. A fun find regardless.
Thanks for the advice. What would be good for an average joe like me to use to get some detailed pictures?
I bought a cheap chinese USB microscope from amazon. It doesn't take the best pictures but they are clear/close enough to be able to see what I am looking for.
Pretty sure it beats using my iphone camera. I have found some 1970 S pennies that I need to look at closer.
This is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/Portable-Micr...id=1410462086&sr=8-16&keywords=usb+microscope Though when I bought mine I only paid $14.99.
Here's some better pics. You can see the Y in Liberty in the second to last column. Right in front of the Y, you can see Lincoln's back. Further you go, you can see his chin and a little of his nose. At the top of the Memorial you can see his bow tie. The columns are very distorted and there is hardly, if any at all, of Lincoln in the Memorial. The die crack is at the lower right hand corner of the building. With closer magnification and different angles, I can make out In God We Trust. Hope you like the pictures.
I can sort of see what you are talking about now. Work on the picture taking Die cracks are pretty common on the edges of the memorial where yours is, especially on 83's. FYI - A crack in that area is "one" diagnostic for the 1983 DDR 002 MDS. http://coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1983&die_id=1983p1dr002&die_state=mds I don't believe your's is but just something for you to look for in the future.
Here's that clash of the Y, the chin and mouth. You can see the columns are very distorted. You can also see the die crack.
Here are more pictures of what I was talking about the "Y" clash, clash of the beard and mouth. The columns are very distorted. You can also see a die crack, which it might be a die break, at the corner of the Memorial.
I see the die crack and what looks like it may be an upside down Y now, but I always see things Hey for now if you can't get a hold of GD camera there a phone apps Microscope and Picture apps, may work a bit better until you get an upgrade
The "Y" you see in the columns may be the Y of Liberty clashed from the obverse die onto the reverse die causing the resulting Y on your coin.
Agree with Furryfrog....lots of die cracks in the 83's, bubbles, etc etc. I like your die crack, though, it's pretty nice. It's hard to find an untouched '83 in good shape. I would hang onto this one!
It seems like 75% of the 83s I see have a very small die crack but nothing like this one. I have this in a hard plastic protector, I'm surely keeping this one.
