I don't understand what you mean by 'shoddy journalism'. It's just a news story. There doesn't seem to be much opinion in the piece and it does make reference to the law allowing pre releases of coins. Readers can make up their own mind whether they agree with releasing 2015 coins in 2014, and whether officials of a govt agency should receive them and get a special valuable label.
I buy a lot of stuff from the mint and think they usually handle things pretty well. I don't have a problem with minting it in 2014 for a 2015 issue date. I do have a problem with them issuing them to employees of the US Marshall's Service in 2014. Unless this commem is exempt from the law, someone from the US mint should spend some time in the big house. We need to stop this kind of precedence.
Two thread for same thing. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/20...ins-sell-early-to-officials-of-agency.254343/
The law is the law. I don't like driving the speed limit but have often gotten ticketed for it. What harm does it do? It allows some folks to benefit at the expense of others.
Say wha? (1)No law is being broken with releasing the coin early. (2)You've been ticketed for driving the speed limit before? (3) Who is on the "at their expense" side of this coin issue, and how?
Odd how they have specific numbers for each type to be sold to the public, but for the give-away, they just say "limited number". 100 is a limited number, but so is 10,000,000. If the highway law just said " Limited Speed ahead", and the elected officials limit was set @ 100, and everyone else was set @ 35, would that put confidence in the citizens to get a correct deal?
Um not to get nit picky here but marshals are federal police, and as such they go any speed on the highway when they need to. So yes you only go the limit and they actually go any speed they need to. Why is everyone saying elected officials when these people are specifically non elected career law enforcement. No elected politician got any coins only cops. And it wasn't any crazy number the article specifically said Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson distributed 35 three-coin sets to employees of the Service. I honestly don't understand why everyone's panties are twisted over this. Let the cops who get shot at, keep us safe at night and are vastly underpaid have a coin set from the mint. And not even all the marshals got coins just 35. Why are some here having hissy fits over this?
I say "shoddy" because the author uses the term "sold" when in fact he has no idea if the coins were "sold" to these two individuals. I believe that they were "awarded" and not "sold". The very fact that the piece has generated outrage by some is a clear indicator that it was not worded correctly.
Then by all means, read the law governing the issuance of these coin Phil. Here, I'll quote it for you: "(c) Commencement of Issuance.--The Secretary may issue coins, to the public, minted under this Act beginning on or after January 1, 2015, except for a limited number to be issued prior to such date to the Director of the United States Marshals Service and employees of the Service for display and presentation during the 225th Anniversary celebration." And that's the law.
Did they really create a law that allowed the issuance of a 2015 commem coin to give to the US Marshall's Service prior to 2015? I thought it was a joke. Who said they couldn't come to concensus and pass a law that matters to the citizens of our great country?
