Went to a coin show yesterday and bought a roll of Morgan and piece dollars plus two extras for 436$. All of the Morgans are 1921 but seem to be in F+ or VF condition. There are 5 1922 peace dollars, 4 1923, and 1 1926. Sorry for the less than perfect photo, the coins really do look better in person. Was it a good find for the price? Has anyone gotten a significantly better deal? -wheatmaster101 P.S.- sorry for the stuff in the background of the picture, I need to do some organization.
Melt value for 22 is ~$293.00. All of those are common dates and I wouldn't have paid much over melt, if any, for them. Purdy coins though
Based on the current silver spot ($17.27) a Morgan/Peace dollar has a bullion value of $13.36. Of course a dealer has to make a living so let's say $15 each. Assuming I did my numbers correctly you paid about $19.80 each. It's your decision about the deal.
Thanks for your opinions! I looked up similar listing on ebay and they seem to be going for 480$+. I think Ill keep them and wait till silver gets out of a sinkhole.
I think you got a fairly good deal. I often hear people saying they would not pay over melt for silver dollars, but they just don't sell at that price, even for worn ones. I think you did okay, especially if you plan on taking the long approach to collecting.
Yup. Dollars still trade at a substantial premium to melt. I'm a bottom-feeder, so I look for lower prices than you paid, but I don't find them very often.
you could do a lot worse. Fair price for the market and a good way to put away silver. The near melt silver is fun to look at so many of them have not been looked at for varieties.
I don't think you can realistically beat $19.81 per on silver dollars right now unless you get lucky or pick up a couple real junkers. I think this is a pretty good deal. Obviously if your purchasing them purely as bullion then I would say you made a mistake.
Thanks to sshafer11, I also did the math and you can't beat the price. If you are a collector you did a good job. I have 4 grand children and If I had that group I would give one or two to each of the grandchildren. Now comes the part when the silver prices go up maybe you can sell some of them back to recoup what you paid. Just my thought.
Well I actually read in a magazine that coins that are slabbed in AG are actually in demand for grading sets, so get your slicks slabbed!
I can easily get worn dollars for two dollars over melt, but this is not the standard. I would say $19.00 -20.00 for commons would fair.
