Hi. Can anyone give me information about this dime? The back seems to be sanded off except for the center but the front seems not to be damaged. Is this an error from the mint or other machinery? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, -David
You take everything to seriously don't be full of yourself, it doesn't make you any better. All I see here is you being negative about everything. Maybe some people don't know some things. Just stop already!
What do you expect? It's too obvious. A little common sense helps........and maybe some knowledge of the minting process........and maybe a book on Mint errors.........and maybe a little reading. Chris
Hello David. This is PMD - Post Mint Damage done deliberately by a person. Don't worry when I started off collecting coins many weird things looked like errors to me also. That is how we learn. Thanks for sharing this coin and keep on searching!
Wow, this Chris dude is so rude....I'm a poet and don't even knowit! How about offering some advice or a book you think might be appropriate!
You've been a member here since 2006, and you don't know what books I've suggested over the last 4 years? I know someone who must be a friend of yours. He doesn't like to read, either. Chris
Most "Coin Books" describe the die making and coin minting processes and literally any coin book on die varieties explains it a bit better. When looking at a coin that is obviously "different" the first questions that should go through a collectors mind is "What, within the die making or minting process could have possibly caused this?" From any rudimentary standpoint, there is literally NOTHING within either process which would produce the condition of the subject coin. Nothing. When NOTHING is the answer then the only logical conclusion to be reached is damage done to the coin after the minting process. The damage done to the subject coin has been seen many times to many different coins over the years and the pictures are always followed with the "How could this have happened?" Even the OP states that it "seems to be sanded off" which is the obvious answer. Since the US Mint does not use "sanding" in any of their production processes then the coin was obviously altered after the fact. It does not take a book to understand this. And, its not a question of being "rude" as much as a question of being direct to the obvious answer.
Actually, I signed up in 2006, but haven't even been lurking all that time. Just recently came back and decided I want to get more involved in the community. Have some nice errors I can share when I get some time. I have ALOT of interests and they seem to get cycled. Right now, I'm trying to get a decent inventory of my collection, get the nice coins protected (in Kointains, etc), and further my self-education (with reading, I LOVE reading!). BTW...you remind ME of someone I KNOW named CHRIS that's not into numismatics.
Agreed, but unfortunately the written word does not give us the inflection necessary to give a sense of the mood of the "speaker", so sometimes direct comes off as being rude and I apologize if I offended CHRIS for saying he was rude.
You didn't offend me, but you have to realize that so many of these subjects come up dozens and dozens of times. When a simple question can be answered easily with a modicum of research, I get slightly irritated when someone asks for the answer instead of investigating the facts. In truth, I want others to learn to help themselves. Chris
