Does anyone know why they didnt make silver dollars between 1904 and 1921 and why they only have the morgan design for one year when they start making the silver dollars again in 1921 why didnt they just continue the morgans all the way through 1904-1921??
Read the history of US numismatics. For instance, THE US MINT AND COINAGE by Donald Taxay or THE COMPLETE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF US COINS by Walter Breen. Most of this story is also in The Red Book, which costs about $10 and is available at your local library. We always say in collecting "Buy the book before you buy the coin." The short story is that the Morgan dollar was a useless coin. It was created by an act of Congress in response to financial interests of the silver miners who saw the price of silver drop as its supply increased. Congress forced the US Mint to buy 2 million ounces per month and strike them into coins. Finally, the nonsense stopped. During World War I Britain was strapped for cash and in danger of losing her grip on India. I918 the US lent Britain $200 million in silver which came from melting silver dollars. In 1921, Britain paid the silver back and it had to be turned into coins. As a result, we have tons of 1921 Morgan Dollars and zero 1922 half dollars, quarters or dimes.
