Well I came across the coin here on Coin talk I think and I thought it would be neat, the story itself is neat...Did a mint guy do this on purpose? I have no idea if it is true but it is neat nonetheless. I know these have been dropping in value and I could have waited but I came across this one and really liked it. So as to grade...I do not have it in hand but I am thinking PR66, so everyone here will hammer me and say PR65. I think it is somewhere in between. No matter, if it comes in hand looking like this, then I will be happy. Yes, I overpaid I think but the seller was nice, drove a good bargain and when a math error was made I told him I would give $3 more than he asked. He said no....he went with what he had typed. Good person to deal with. Comments?

    Which one is yours?

Until 8 years ago, I had only heard about the "Superbird" and when several came up for sale, I decided to buy one. The only photo I had seen was the CPG image, and when I finally received the coin, I was very disappointed. The gouge or whatever it was that caused it, was very small and you had to stretch your imagination a bit to consider it an "S". Needless to say, I returned it immediately for a refund.

Based on the second image of the obverse, I don't think it will make 66.

Maybe so, but camera's do strange things....I hope for the best...

Cameras can make things disappear depending on the angle and the amount of light, but they can't make things appear that aren't already there. I still don't think it will make 66.

Well I can not disagree yet...but hairlines are do common and cameras magnify then two fold. I am still going with 66 but maybe it is a 65.5..... I can not wait to have it in hand.

Well I only have a short time but this is much better in hand than the pictures. I will post a few and go into more detail later...it is not enhanced feathers but I am not worried, as this thing is mildly cameo even....nice.. 1952 SB Proof 01.jpg 1952 SB Proof 03.jpg Still0201952 SuperBird 0.jpg Still0221952 SuperBird 0.jpg Olympus SuperBird 07.jpg Still0041952 SuperBird 0.jpg

I always thought that the name of this characteristic was the only reason the coin ever got attention since the effect is so trivial.

Why do you scrub the number? Do you think China will steal it?
And to answer your old op question, the running story is that a mint worker was a big fan of the old George reeves superman show or the comic as a kid and decided to carve an s on the die which also explains the crude work if it was just some mint employee fan boy doing it quickly for a laugh.

I just sold one for $95. They're not worth slabbing imo

Then again, it was the original thread creator who bumped it, remaining on topic. Even I have to consider letting this one slide. :)

Well is it Cameo? And if it is then slabbing would be worth it as the ones I saw sold north of $250....I paid around $100 for mine if I remember right.

** Nevermind ** - Why start a new one when it is the same coin?

Oh these are not mine so I scrub the numbers, yes.

I've learned that asking the community about raw cameo, deep cameo, prooflike, deep proof like coins are pretty much pointless.
Only you, (or a tpg) will be able to make that call.... Even with the best imagery it's just not possible to say for sure either way...
    Hope this helps......
