Postal Orders. Ballabh, the only connection with philately that postal orders have is being issued from a post office. The design of a typical British Commonwealth postal order strongly resembles a banknote. In recent years, postal orders have begun to become popular with notaphilists, especially those in England.I will have a thread in the Paper Money section of the forum on these. Steve has already posted a picture of the Maltese postal order there as an example. Aidan.
According to few catalogs, the weight of double paisa is 22.16 grams. The first image of your double paisa coin looks in very good shape. So, it should be very close to this weight. A similar coin from same mint in my collection (in VF grade) weighs 22.11 grams. Let us know when you have the weights of these coins. Regards Ballabh Garg
Here are couple of One rupee coins of Tipu Sultan from Patan mint Dated AH 1216 -> Dated AH 1218 -> Regards, Ballabh Garg
And couple of his gold pagodas Patan Mint (Also known as ShreeRangaPattanam mint) -> Nagar Mint -> Regards Ballabh Garg
Dewan Purnaiya issued few copper coins in his name and they have a mythical animal "Shardula" design on them. I will try to scan them later and will post here. Here is a silver rupee issued by Krishnaraja Wodeyar dated AH 1222 Regards Ballabh Garg
Ballabh, that a very nice Mysorean silver 1 Rupee of AH1222 (1807),which is in the period of Regent Dewan Purnaya's administration. Is there a regnal year on there somewhere? Aidan.
Ian,that is a very nice Mysorean 25 Cash. There were also 6-1/4 & 12-1/2 Cash coins that were also issued by Regent Dewan Purnaiya at the same time. Aidan.
Ian,these Mysorean coins are often found with blundered legends & blundered dates.Your examples are very clearly inscribed. Aidan.
I think the 25 cash coin is brilliant. You'd struggle to find a more 3 dimensional coin since the ancient greek coinages. I got these coins as part of a lot of Indian Princely State coins about ten years ago. I had great fun identifying them (there is no hope for me! ) I'm slowly but surely getting them imaged and onto omnicoin. Check out the addy in my signature for other indian coins etcetera.....
Here's is a much sought after coin... got it today.. Its a 1799 Bombay Presidency (Tellicherry mint) coin commemorating the death of Tipu Sultan. But I cannot read anything on this coin.. If anyone can read it, that would be great...
Biju, that is a silver 1/5 Rupee dated AH1214.I haven't got this one,but I do have the 1805 issue. There is also a Tellicherry machine-struck silver 1 Rupee with a plain edge that was struck at Old Mumbai (Bombay) & a dump gold 1 Pagoda dated 1809 that weighs 3 gm. that completes the 4 coin series from Tellicherry (Malabar Coast). Aidan.
On obverse, it reads "T.99 Sikka Nishini AH 1214" means 'government coin issued in AH 1214'. The reverse legend reads "Zarb Tellicherry julus" and translates to 'Struck at Tellicherry (under) royal (orders)'. This coin was minted in malabar coastal area under Bombay presidency. Regards Ballabh Garg
Yes, the regnal year on this is 46. It's shown on the first image in second line. It's closer to the moon symbol on right side and the first character in regnal year is written in English "4". Regards Ballabh Garg
Biju,I couldn't read the Arabic inscription, but I can read the true Arabic numerals.I had to check,as the dates are often struck partly or completely off the coin, because it is a crudely struck hammered coin. Aidan.
