I got a $2 bill at the bank. It's a series 1976 #B 02248835 A. It has a sloppy postmark that says: GOSHEN APR 16 197? The full year and the last line aren't readable. It was only half-applied. Goshen is one town over from me. The postmark is in purple ink. Anyone know the story behind this? Maybe the post office was marking them for people, and either the person spent it, or the post office just put it back in the bank since the mark is messed up. I'm guessing it's 1976 but I could be wrong.
Is the stamp still on the note? If you look on ebay you will see these note listed as first day of issue. It was popular to do when the note was first released.
I have one of these, too (stamped somewhere in Michigan). If memory serves me right they sell from $5-20 in perfect conditon (by perfect I mean it's as good as it was when printed, centering, etc. may be off) depending on the whim of the buyer.
Well, mine is very slightly bent (not folded) in the middle, and the stamp is really lousy. I'll probly keep it anyway, maybe see if the coin dealer I go to is interested. Maybe I'll get $3 for it
Yeah, April 13, 1976. Here's mine, complete with 13-cent Spirit of '76 stamp (boy, the trouble some of these guys went to! )...
LOL I hate these things. I try hard NOT to buy them but sometimes they come in collections =/ I list them in small quantities on ebay...they are worth very little over face value unless you can get a run of consecutive numbers or something else that makes them special. If they're not UNC I usually spend them or deposit them just for kicks. tradernick
