Just found this one today from fresh P bank roll. I over laid the error coin on top of normal coin for reference. Look at E PLURIBUS UNUM on bottom coin then look at top coin (the Error). See where UNUM is Struck on part of PLURIBUS and is goughed in and really there is no "UNUM in its proper place and throughs off the entire motto. The goughing starts at 7 in date and continues around most of coin (ran out of pic space. Any thoughts? Thank you

Hi Royall, I am very excited about this coin for I too thank it is a nice find. I bought my bank out of 50 rolls today and this (so far out of 6 rolls) is the only one like it that I have found..found other errors upside down motto, cracks..and some note sure what. Like to get a feel of what it might be worth though. Thanks

That gouging looks like it was caused by being roughly handled by a counting machine of some sort when it was being put into the rolls.

    That's my guess.

Hi Aidan, Don't think its a counting machine that did this. Look again at PLURIBUS where you can distinctly see UNUM in last part of PLURIBUS..not onyy that there is no UNUM after PLURIBUS just goes on with IGWT

I'm sorry to say---that is damage, it doesn't look a thing like the coins that went through the lettering machine twice....this is damage by something and I would agree iwth Aidan...more than likely a counting machine.

The letter arraingement I'm seeing is:
    E...P.L.U.R.I.B.U.S...U.N.U.M
    E...P.L.U.?.?.?.?.?.....I.N....G.O.D

How could a counting machine do that? Sure, it could easily munch the letters away (as denoted by question marks) but how could it slide the letters "IN GOD" into the location where "UNUM" is supposed to be?

    "E PLURIBUS IN GOD?"

Hi Speedy, I appeciate your reply but if it were damage of some sort..counting machine or other how would the counting machine or other indent UNUM in place of last of PLURIBUS?

Im seeing damage also. Sorry. If it was some sort of over print it shouldnt be so deformed. Looks like post mint damage.

I see the 'Pluribus in God', I am guessing the edge printing machine messed up, I am quite sure this is some kind of error.

We are talking about the coin on top right?...the big nicks or dents in the rim?....I don't have the answer but go back to the Error Forum here on CoinTalk and read the other posts about these President Dollars---there is another photo where the edge lettering was done twice and there is no large nick....I'm thinking that it was a defectived <sp?> planchet.

I think what you have there is a case of both things happening - one legend being struck over the other and then damage on top of it. In any case, I'd have to say it is not unusual. There have already been several pics right here on CT of legends running over top of another.

In my honest opinion, the errors on this coin and its edge design are going to be so common that the hard coins to find will be the ones without the errors.

Doug, you have nuked the target so much you vapourised it.I wasn't doubting the error in the edge lettering at all.It was the gouging that really caught my eye so much I had to say something.

Looks like the coin got stuck as it rolled thru the edge lettering process. Causing the misplaced letters and damage. But I think it is mint damage not post mint.

There should be a gap in the lettering on the "Damaged" coin. Not shown in the pics.

I don't know about it. It could be either way. It looks like there is some raised metal in the last pic, but my eyes could be decieving me.

Looks to me like for some reason the coin stopped rotating momentarily as it was passing through the lettering machine. Since the letters are raised on the edge die they SCRAPED across the coin and created the gouge in the edge. Then the coin began rolling again leaving the last weak impression of UNUM and the normal IN GOD. . . I would think that there should be some place on the edge of the coin where there is a wider than normal gap in the edge instription.

Exactly the point I was trying to make.:thumb:

On the circulation cions the edge lettering is ROLLED onto the coins. This coin got stuck as it rolled thru causing the damage you see. The coins you see with double or extra lettering went thru the machine twice.
