Silver Eagle proof question from a newbie

If I understand this whole grading process correctly collectors will order silver proof eagles from the mint and take them out of their original package to be graded. I was just wondering what the advantage to diong this is. Is it just purely to have a nice number to put next to them to be sold? Also, wouldn't any new proof coin form the mint have a pretty good chance of being a high grade equal to others released fom the mint? I just think they look so much nicer in their original holders form the mint.
I just ordered the 2007 silver proof from the mint, and bought a 2005,2003 (in original package I like them better) from ebay.

oh i have a foll-up question to my original one.
how can you tell that a coin is "high grade" if it's still in original mint packaging?

okay, the reason for TPG'ing ( the first time I ever used that as a verb) modern stuff like silver eagles, is to remove money from your pocket and put it into the graders pockets.
    No other reason.

    kneil3,

I'm with you. I have all he BU Eagles and I recently decided to add the proofs as well. I also like them in the original government packaging, complete with COA. I have to agree with Treashunt - TPG's take money out of your pocket that could be better spent on additional coins.

Sorry. Should have added that there are certain coins that I would not feel comfortable buying without some type of third party grading/certification. For instance, I'm still looking for a nice trade dollar. With all the counterfeits coming from Asia, a raw coin would be too scary for me!

Glad to hear someone enjoys them original too. It just seems like it takes a way form the coin a little when it has been taken out. I guess if you really want to sell it its worth it, but i think i wanto to hold on to them. What a great looking coin.

I look for buys on coins that are already slabbed. Like paying for the coin and getting the slab for free.

Like this one -1972 PCGS Proof-68 D-CAM SILVER.
Only cost me $14.00 at a local coin show.

    9roswell,

Really is scary on certain coins! There's a 1916D Merc on ebay right now that the sellers says ANACS sent back as fake, with the D added. It was still up to almost $60.00 the last I looked. Who knows if it will be bought relatively inexpensively and then resold with no mention of ANACS's opinion! Let's hope not.
