I purchased a 1912 $2 1/2 Indian off ebay, and it arrived today. The pictures were fuzzy, so I took a risk with it. When it arrived, it had a D mint mark. Obviously they did not make a 1912-D. Weirdest counterfeit I've seen of these. Other than that, it was a decent counterfeit. Has anyone else seen or heard of these counterfeits with mint marks that didn't exist? I wonder why they added the D... would have fooled more people without it!
It's called a fantasy piece . . . the 1915-D Half Eagle is fairly well known, but I've never heard of the 1912-D before.
Assuming it came from an eBay seller, have you checked other items offered by that seller as well? There's a big difference between someone reselling a one off that they bought months before, and a seller pumping the market full of known bad coins. I've seen both in the past and, while I've treated the former respectfully, I've vigorously and repeatedly reported to eBay those which obviously were selling a number of fakes.
I actually just looked at their other listings, and I must say, I believe there are some fakes. Some listed that way, some not. Here is the item I bought... take a look at the other listings and see what you think. http://www.ebay.com/itm/161435540893?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2648&ssPageName= And I know what you mean. I buy and sell some for fun, and have accidentally sold a few good fakes. I always offer 100% returns on them, and feel bad when it happens. There are some good fakes out there, but this one was obvious enough I could catch it before trying to resell.
