Hi folks. Again, I lack experience grading this series. I'm going to guess... vf30? What do you all think? Thanks for looking.
Without looking it up, I'm gonna say you're aiming a bit high. Do you have a copy of the ANA Grading Standards for US Coins? Or "MAKING THE GRADE: Comprehensive Grading Guide for U.S. Coins"?
I'd give it a VG with a Harsh Harsh cleaning of some kind... The fields are littered with scratches and such.
S on the reverse bottom VG? Unless you are severely net grading it. Sell me a roll, but yes, cleaned, probably
I was under the impression that until recently, cleaning and or polishing a coin was an acceptable method of storage and preservation, which is why earlier issues are so tough to find in original (uncleaned) condition. I think the detail is closer to 30 but I don't know. I am only concerned with the level of detail as the cleaning is rather obvious. I got this and the other dimes I posted in a dime type set in a Capitol holder. EDIT to say: I also would like to hear opinions on net grade, but would ask that you very helpful folks would give your opinions on XX-detail, XX-net due to cleaning and dings. Thanks!
Being as it's (IMO) a problem coin, a number grade is irrelevant. You're fine calling it a generic VF.
I realize the numeric grade is irrelevant due to the cleaning. I was just asking as an educational exercise, not having had much practice with this type. Thank you
Gotcha, and for what it's worth, if we did look past the issues, you did well. The coin certainly is no VG or a Fine on remaining details alone.
VF-30 sharpness, cleaned, surfaces a little rough and porous, net VG-10 possibly could be pushed to F-12 no more.
