Spock1k,Goa is the most well-known of the 3 areas,as it is a heavily touristed area.Yes,there is even a cricket ground there.Damao & Diu are not so well-known to many people.

Portuguese India,like French India,did not consist of one contiguous territory.It was a collection of settlements united by a common administration.

To get this coin in such good condition is difficult..... Its pretty difficult to get quality coins of British India especially Victoria Empress and William.

 

Its more difficult to get those copper coins in good condition than the silver coins.. So, the 1/12 th Anna is .. I think, quite a good find.. And all the coins you bought seems genuine to me..

Biju,it would be good if you did get that mule coin.I can guess that you will end up picking up those oldercirculation commemoratives that you hadn't got around to finding in change.I haven't had any news about any new Indian commemorative coins.I reckon that there will be a series issued to commemorate 60 years of Indian independence as a British Commonwealth member state.

Aidan, Reserve Bank of India issued some interesting coins recently.. It includes 2 non commemorating coins in the denomination of 1Re and 2Rs. Just refer the pictures below.. It seems the 1Re coin is no more minting ( rumour is that the sign on the obverse resembles a cross). And I've not seen it in circulation. The 2Rs coin is quite common now and note the difference in the obverse... The third one is a 2 Rs commemorating 150 years of Telecommunication.. This coin has the potential to become a very much sought after coin. This coin is not yet issued for circulation (it was supposed to be minted in 2004). But the UNC sets and the proof sets are released. It seems they are not issueing this coin for circulation.. This coin now worths around Rs.600 to Rs.800/- ($14 to $18 dollars approximately). Some of the dealers have found out this and they are hoarding this particular one. Fortunately for me, I reserved this set from the mint and got it a couple of months before.

 

Biju,those are very nice coins.You should take them out of those holders,take some photos,& then submit the photos to Krause Publications.

I don't know what the cross symbol on the 1 Rupee & 2 Rupees stands for,but I know it is not a Christian Cross.It could be the symbol of a religious organisation that is commonly practiced in southern India such as the Mar Thoma Church or the Malabar Church.

Aidan, it represents the 'Unity in Diversity' as per the press release.. But, still it became subject of many heated discussions all over the country. This coin is now known as 'cross - rupee' in numismatic circles here.

 

It is also referred to as the plus rupee. the 150 years of telecom is by which mint Bombay or Calcutta? I think I have but dont know for sure. Thanks

 

Spock1k,there's no mintmark at all on the Telecommunications Sequicentenary 2 Rupees.I presume it was struck at the Calcutta Mint,as opposed to the Bombay Mint.That's the first time I have seen a coin design depicting a mobile phone.

Biju,I can guess you will be looking for those Cross 1 Rupee & Cross 2 Rupees coins in change.Did you end up finding that 5 Rupees with a Swastika on it?

That's a nice Victorian rupee. Now a days it's tough to get them so nice.

Did you tried measuring the size of this coin. That will indicate the mint at which this coin was minted.

Nice little coin in beautiful grade. However few years back I saw few hoards of these uncirculated coins listed on eBay by an east-coast dealer (and was sold for more then catalog price)

Nice selection of these British Indian coins, Steve.

1943 is a good date for that 1 pice coin and I think it was the only year when this denomination was stuck with High Crown (Am away from catalog but will check that later). Also, it's a very short series to collect if you want to collect these by date/mint/crown varieties.

Nice looking 1907 Calcutta mint rupee.

1898 was a key date for most of the Victorian denomination. I am not sure if Krause lists 1898 dated coins for higher price. But in Indian markets, the 1898 dated coins commands a hefty premium (specially silver coins).

Its a mule coin of 'Shree Narayanadev' Commemorative.. I'll post the pictures on this coming sunday..
