Picked up this pair which was very attractive in hand. Didn't realize how many varieties there are to the Caracalla Denarii. Roman Empire. Caracalla AR Denarius. Rome, 198-217 AD. 19mm, 3.53gr. Obv: Laureate and draped bust right, seen from behind. Rev: Dea Caelestis seated facing, head turned right, holding thunderbolt and scepter on lion galloping right over rushing waters. RIC IV 130a; BMCRE 280; RSC 97. Superbly struck coin, beautiful design. NGC Ch AU 5/5, 5/5. Roman Empire. Caracalla 198-217 AD. Rome Mint. AR Double Denarius. 22mm, 4.90gr. Obv: Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right. Rev. Sol standing facing, head left, nude but for chlamys, raising right arm in salutation, holding whip in left hand. RIC IV 293e; RSC 390; BMCRE 192-3. Superb detail and style. NGC AU* 5/5, 4/5, Fine Style.
Nicely done Z-Man! Caracalla denarii have some of the best portraits on Roman coinage imo. And some of the widest variety of portraiture. From kid to young man to bearded fierce face.
