    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

Find articles by Grover Criswell. Most of the Confederate States (and cities, and railroads) issued paper scrip during the Civil War period. There were few controls on how much was printed, so the farther you got from the source, the more the bills were discounted.

Your bill, in that condition, would be worth $3 to $5, in my opinion. Some Criswell catalogs may contain a listing for this item of scrip. One other factor, until the 4th issue of June, 1862, there was practically no paper money produced with denominations less than $5, which caused a drastic need for small change, since "Union" coins were hoarded, and which led to many issues of 10c, 15c, 25c, 50c, and $1 notes from municipal and private sources.

After seeing the examples on eBay, I may have been a little low on price, at $3 to $5, but your note's in bad shape. Hard to say, maybe $10 is a better estimate. They are not rare in poor condition, but apparently quite scarce as uncirculateds.

Your Bank of the State of South Carolina note is real. I'm not sure why you'd be unable to find one like it anywhere online as it's very common in all conditions. Yours is worth about $10. As stated in the last thread, your note is in Austin Sheheen's SC Obsoletes book, which you'd be well served to acquire.

    I put a value on mine at $20. It's in much better shape but it's a 50C fractional. P1010841.JPG P1010833.JPG

These were printed for a number of states I believe, I think Florida has some very similar ones...

I LOVE fractional currency, probably because it's so odd. I usually stick to post-Civil War stuff while it's technically still legal tender. Maybe I'll get back into that, and some of the earlier paper money which can be BEAUTIFUL.

I probably will but there is ONE THING I REALLY have my eye on, right now. I'm hoping it doesn't go way past bid

(up to the point I'm not buying anything else unless this one lowbll bid I have goes through which is impossible)

MEC2 is correct. Very similar Florida Fractionals from the same time period.
