well its part II of my pickup from last time. This time I'm going a bit back in time with this. Seleucid. Seleucus II : Sardis Mint 246-226 BC O: Head of Heracles in lion skin headdress R: Apollo seated, holding bow and arrow. MYHP in left field, QE in right field Got one more, when time permits I will take pictures and post it up.
Wow, that's a beautiful new pick-up!! (yummy-yummy!!) ... the coin has super eye-appeal (a very rugged, cool lookin' addition!!)
Very, very nice...and I have to add...for a Seleucid bronze. They're tough in better grades. The only two I own are of Antiochus XII and Alexander Balas. I don't collect Seleucid but these two coins are directly related to my interest in Nabataeans.
I'll toss-in a couple of cool examples with Seleukid anchor countermarks ... => man, maybe not everybody loves countermarks, but I sure love 'em!! Seleukid Kingdom. Antiochos I, Æ 20 mm Antioch 280-261 BC Diameter: 20 mm Weight: 4.52 grams Obverse: Macedonian shield with anchor as central boss Reverse: Elephant right; c/m: anchor Lycia, Phaselian Silver Coinage (Revision of Alex III of Macedon TET) Mint: Phaselis 205/204 BC (year “14”) Diameter: 32.5 mm Weight: 15.52 grams Obverse: head of young Heracles right, clad in lion’s skin which knotted at neck Reverse: [ΑΛ]ΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ behind Zeus seated left, holding eagle on extended right hand and resting on scepter held in left, ΙΔ (=14) above Φ (= Phaselis) below Zeus’ right arm (Seleucid anchor countermark in left field)
Nice to see some Seleucids here. For many collectors these seen to be the eastern limit of their collection. For me they are the most western outskirts. Here another Seleukos II Kallinikos: And a Seleukos I tetradrachm: (The first one is the scarce of the two)
Here is my Seleukos I tetradrachm in his name. Seleucid Kingdom, Seleukos I, Silver tetradrachm Obv:- Head of Herakles right, clad in lion head headdress Rev:- BASILEWS SELEUKOU, Zeus enthroned left, holding Nike and scepter, monogram left; Antioch mint, c. 300 B.C.; Tef:- SNG Spaer 2, WSM 923, CSE 8 A high profile coin.
Seleucid Kingdom, Demetrios I Soter, Silver tetradrachm Obv:– Diademed head of Demetrios I right inside a fillet border Rev:– BASILEWS DEMHTROS SOTEPOS / BXR, Tyche seated left on throne ornamented with tritoness, holding short scepter and cornucopia; in outer left field, controls; in exergue Minted in Antioch on the Orontes, S.E. 162 (151/0 B.C.) Reference:– Seleucid Coins 1641.8h; SMA 131. Obverse struck a little off center
Lovely Seleukos, Maridvnvm ! I've seen many of these appear a bit pinkish both in photo's and real live. Ads to the luster i think. The Demetrios coin is in a nice state. But knowing his history, this portrait enforces my negative impression of the guy. Coming to power, he had his predecessor Antiochus V, who was just a child, killed on the spot .
Demetrios I Serratus AE17 162 - 150 BC Diameter: 16.5mm Weight: 4.41 grams Obverse: Horse Reverse: Elephant Reference: SNG Spaer 1299 NOTE => this is Demetrios I (Seleukid King) which is different from Demetrios I (Bactrian King) ... geesh, I learned that the hard way
