ok I am home now looking at my 17th century World coin catalog and I am not seeing your coin in it. the dates I see for the 4000 reis denomination start at 1642-1652 and these coins have a countermark. your coin does NOT have a counter mark. hmmm I am confused on your coins date.

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

...not bronze Prestons did confirm it was gold...

So, a fake to fool collectors, not a contemporary fake to fool merchants?

do NOT take scrap for it. you might have a very rare coin.

What is that "stain" on the left side of the coin(as it is pictured)?

    bdunnse Who dat?

Janerical's coin is in post 7. The coin in the link given in post 5 is an example of a real coin (i.e. not fake). The coin in post 1 is not Janerical's coin...it is what Rick is calling a fake in post 20.

Agreed. Don't scrap it, if authentic it could be really valuable.

my catalog does not have your coins date but that does not mean it does not exist in a different book. I do not have that book. maybe others here that collect Portugal coins might know more about this coin. not knowing is driving me crazy in a good way. my guess is that you have a very very rare coin.

This part has me confused. I didn't think gold did that. Admittedly I don't know much about gold :)

yeah it could just be a stain, or it could be a fake. Tell-tale signs.

we know that the coin has been in the family for approx. 100 years if this helps xx
We think Prestons did that when they did an acid test to see if was gold xx
