Hello. I just wanted to let you and your readers know that I bought a 1909-S VDB on EBAY, PCGS slabbed, for approx. $2K. IT WAS FAKE. If it hadn't been for an unknown angel who viewed the auction and sending me an email saying that the coin I just purchased was a fake I'd never have been the wiser. Thank God for good people! I noticed the people in forum saying if it's not slabbed don't buy it and all slabbed are real. Well, I can truthfully say that they should rethink this notion. After his email I took the coin to a respected dealer (Sahara Coins in Las Vegas) and he came back after looking at it and said " How much did you pay for this coin? I told him and he said "I'm sorry to tell you this but this is a fake". I couldn't believe it. The slab looked real complete with a coin reg. number and PCGS look changing sticker. I had to go to Ebay and tell them the whole story. I sent the seller an email and voiced my feelings and intentions. He said he didn't know it was a fake but that's debatable. When he saw the dark consequences he sent me a check when I sent him the coin. I should have destroyed it but I might not have gotten my money back. Please tell your readers of this matter to educate and caution that NOT ALL slabbed coins are real. I tried to get back to that forum but was unable to. That is why I signed up for your page and was my only reason for doing so because I don't usually get into this blog stuff.I just felt compelled to let your readers know in the same way that unknown man did by letting me know and not lose 2K. I guess Ronald Reagan had it right when he said "Trust.....yet verify" Good luck and good buying to you all

    1) welcome

    2) you said: "I noticed the people in forum saying if it's not slabbed don't buy it and all slabbed are real"

I have been here a few days and have never seen anyone say that "all slabbed are real"
They do say to buy the keys slabbed.
And there have been many discussions about fake slabs.
If you purchased a fake slab, that is education, ask before buying.
If the slab was real & the coin fake, then the slabbing company would have made good.

    Whose slab was it?
Can you post a link to the auction?

Also, how do you email the winner of an eBay auction?

Great question, I saw that, and forgot to mention it.

Only thing I can think of is contacting Ebay and telling them there's a counterfeit on item such and such, and you need to contact the buyer. Even then I'm not sure Ebay would reveal the buyers email.

How did this angel discover your identity/email?

Edit: I see that carboni already asked this.

Please post pics! We need to learn too! And report that seller to ebay.

Along with a few others I know, I used to let buyers know when I'd observed them win / buy a fake on eBay. Unfortunately, eBay now prevents us from figuring out who to contact, so they've unwittingly done a disservice to their buying community.

Sorry about the redundant content . . . I should have read the whole thread before answering the OP.

Hello everyone. I am the one who wrote about buying the fake. The coin was fake but had been replaced into a genuine slab of a real coin wish was sold at an auction earlier, which I found out when I researched the PCGS number. I never took any photos of it. I really have no idea how he was able to contact me to tell me it was fake. The original post I wrote was to the guy Pete who runs this blog. He requested I send letter to you people so I did. I did this to forwarn any new collectors of this forgery action. I did this ONLY to help others because someone who didn't know me from Adam took it upon himself to help me. I have never done any forum posting before but with critical, unbelieving, accusasive way you have treated me I doubt I ever will attempt to do so again in the future. You may ALL feel quite accomplished in having chased this elderly man away from any forum contributions. I true my thought I was getting involved with other lime minded individuals but I know in my heart I would NEVER treat someone as you did me. Good luck and God bless and goodbye.

Hi Mirage. I see that one poster said you might be trolling. The rest of the responses were totally legitimate. Many of us on here are long time eBayers with lots of experience (I joined in 1998, and have over 1,000 transactions). We simply wanted to know how you as a buyer could be contacted by someone not involved in your transaction. That is where the skepticism comes from.

I appreciate your post giving us a heads up. Stick around, there are many knowledgeable folks here.

    Aw, stick around.

Someone who posts & then disappears is always suspect.

It is still strange how someone got your info.
