To spend or to hoard... that is the question

  1. Ok so Jody or Bruce might take the most interest in this thread. I have come to a turning point in my collection where I no longer need or have space for my nickle pile!:p

So what is a good course of action? Go to the bank and get some cash. Try to move them on Ebay. Use for little trades here and there. I'm sure there are options I have not thought of.

The problem is I have rolls and rolls of common dates with no gumption any longer to hold on to them.

Any input or advise is greatly welcome,

    Michael

I assume that you are speaking of junk clad coins, spend them, save them (in a bank account) just don't think of them as investments.
If silver, keep 'em, there are many who think that silver & gold are still going up.
Added: oops, just saw the nickel note, never mind, roll them up and deposit them.

are you talking about pre1960 nickels? if they are pre 1960, try to ebay them or sell them to a coin dealer. everyone here is trying to save pre 1960, so don't spend them. look in for phonebook under coins, find a coin dealer and he/she might give you more than face for them. i would rather see old coins in the hands of a collector than in circulation, wouldn't you?

  5. Oh yes. Don't get me wrong I would love for them to live on in some collection. But I was not sure circulated nickles would be worth my time or effort to move.

They are all pre 1960 but when UNC 58s are going for a couple of bucks who wants one that has seen the world? I would think dealers have more than they need, furthering my problem.

speaking of going through coins, i think i'm going to do my first coin roll hunt. i'm going to ask for 2 rolls of nickels at the bowling alley were going to. should i ask for more? i don't want them to say no.

well, i got $11 in quarters in the change machine instead. got nothing but a 1965, 1967, and 1972. i'll keep these until i find another one in better condition. after we left the bowling alley, we stopped at a gas station. i got a few candy bars for all of us and i got up to the cash register. he rung all the stuff up and he said can i get you anything? i said do you have any extra rolls of nickels? he said sorry, we don't. then he said most places don't do that anymore. well, i was didapointed but oh well, maybe somewhere else. i thought gas stations for sure would have extra rolls of coins. guess not. :(

No they are a business and they try to have the number of rolls on hand that they need. they don't want to be short, and they don't want to have more than they need

You know, I figure they have to make some sort of nickel/penny change soon. If you can hold out till that happens, you can probably make a buck, but otherwise you might as well spend most of them.

bruce1947 used to tell me he gets 10 rolls of nickels everytime he goes to the store. i guess you have to be at the right place at the right time to get coins from stores.

I personally would probably roll them and cash them in. Maybe do something fun or buy a coin with the proceeds if you have enough of them. But, if you know any young collectors, they would probably treasure a bunch of old nickels- common dates or not.

In my experience, stores (even Wal-Mart or Target) don't give out rolls of coins. Or they'll tell you to go to customer service - which is allright as long as you can get them there. I've never actually tried that.

And because of the recent craze of hoarding pennies and nickels, some banks are apparently asking if you have an account there before they give you rolls. But I think this is mainly if you want alot of them - like a box (50 rolls).

I'm here in Iowa and have never had a problem at any bank, but I usually only get 1-2 rolls at a time.

As far as whether it's worth keeping them. I'd say if you have the space, why not? Otherwise, it's going to be years before they're really worth anything. Then on the other hand, it IS almost a mystical experience to hold up a '63 Roosy and realize that it's worth a buck.
