I just picked up this Buffalo with deep gold toning and lustrous, glossy surfaces. Unfortunately these photos were the best I could do; the gold color stands out on both sides when in hand. Does this carry any premium, or does the coin need to show additional colors to be considered a "monster toner"? I've looked at some listings of late date Buffalo's and this is about the darkest gold I have seen. I actually paid the lower end of the price range for this coin in MS64 as I took a gamble on a photo even worse than this one, so I didn't lose out. In any case I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the package.
sure it does. there are collectors for all types of color toning. this is incredible. not sure what the added value would be ?
Agree it's not monster toning, but it is attractive to me. I think you partially answered your own question about carrying a premium by telling us you paid below FMV for the coin. When/if you go to sell it, you might get some premium if seen by the right buyer. I don't think you'll get huge premiums like monster toners can garner. Nice looking coin btw. Looks to have very nice luster and toning.
It will carry a premium for certain buyers. How much premium to effect a sale, I dunno. In my case, I am the "greater fool" and paid way over market for my similar toned Buff because I just liked it (PCGS MS66 CAC):
I would say YES, as I like golden toning. However, there are folks that only like blast white coins, even if it means that they were dipped. So, it is totally a matter of taste.
The coin is attractive, so attractive coins do go for a little more so yes there is a premium, but on a MS64 36 D Buff that premium would be very mimimal. There are just too many nice examples around and there are lot with gold toning. Just enjoy the fact you have a nice looking Buff and be done with it. Mike
The main question is does the market value this coin more then a standard coin for the grade with no premium for toning. Not do you like it. The consensus answer appears to be yes but slight.
