Nice one! I still need an Agrippa. I think he has one of the more manly portraits on Roman coinage. Sweet reverse too.
Very beautiful piece of history: Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (c. 23 October or November 64/63 BC – 12 BC) was a Roman statesman and general. He was a close friend, son-in-law, and lieutenant to Augustus and was responsible for his most important military victories, most notably at the Battle of Actium against the forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
More to the point, he would have been the second emperor had he survived Augustus. Had, they lived, his children (by Julia, daughter of Augustus) would have been next. It is quite possible that the emperors from Caligula on might not have changed but it is interesting to guess how Rome without Tiberius might have been different. This is the stuff historical fiction begs for.
It should also be noted that this coin was struck under Caligula, as opposed to the later restitution issues of Titus and Domitian, which exhibit the reverse legend IMP D AVG REST. Once you get those, you can collect the Nemausus crocodile varieties, and don't forget the whopping 52mm, 58g medallion. Source: Wildwinds That should give you a complete set. Am I missing anything?
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/f07.html He was named on coins during his life. How many, I do not know.
This is the exact quality Agrippa I wish to have one day. I am incredibly jealous of this coin and don't want to continue typing just so I can scroll up and drool over the coin further.
Sweet => it looks amazing, JBG (congrats!!) ... I'm lovin' the mini-dolphin (man, I wish that I had a mini dolphin that I could carry around with me ... yup, you've arrived when you own a mini dolphin, my friend)
