1878 Morgan Doubled?

A friend sent me this picture and asked my opinion...something odd but not sure what. Please take a look

Over date variety?

I don’t know of any over dates for this year but it’s possible. The date does have some damage but what I see is minor and on top of the date. It’s what I see under the date that puzzles me. Can he take it to a coin dealer? It does not look worn and the date exhibits some minor doubling. By no means should he sell it.

 

The font on the 7 isn't right looks Fake to me

I'm not much of a Morgan guy. @Rick Stachowski, what is a B2 reverse?

That's just part of the 7. That's an illusion in the closeup it's separate from the 7.

 

The numbers look flattened to me. IMHO the coin took a hit of some kind.

 

If it were sent in for grading, would it grade straight?

 

I don't see an old cleaning not from these pictures . have to look for Fine Lines for any kind of whizzing hard to tell from those pictures .

But I do believe that date is double I agree with Eddie on the pictures of the date

 

I may be wrong but I see no reason why it wouldn’t straight grade. Not sure why you would want to pay the grading fees.

 

Exactly! Don't know why people want to throw away money.

 

The coin is from a friend of the OP so he’s just gathering information. There is minimal damage but there is also what appears to be doubling. It’s a first year of issue but just not worth the grading costs in my book.
