Here is an image of two 1966 Kennedy halves The first one looks normal. The second one has the following differences: 1) The E and R of LIBERTY do not touch the hair 2) The hair attached to the R is not connected back to the head 3) Nose appears broken 4) Pupil line is very narrow. I assume this is an overpolished die but I can't find a reference to this variety Any ideas?
I can see some of what you are saying, the most definite is the hair missing from the back of the head. Nice, and I would consider writing to Coin World's collectors' clearing house. They may be interested.
I have found several of these in 1990-P (actually brought it up here before too, but with pretty lousy pictures!) http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=16333 maybe just a weak strike?
65GT350...the term used to describe this is "abraded die". This is common with the 1966 series with the later die state half dollars. CONECA lists two examples, the ADR (Abraded Die Reverse)-001, which is associated with the 66 SMS DDO-002, and the ADR-002. Usually the reverese dies show some abrasion as well. Attached are some photos of the ADR-002. Like I said this is common with the LDS, I don't think you have anything rare. Larry Nienaber
