I can't tell on this one... I don't see anything obvious from other dates but it just doesn't look right, esecally the thick upper-five. Also, there's some surface damage on that side which is suspect. Any ideas? Here are some close-ups (sorry, something od bout in-line functionlity and limits): high-res high-res
I would wait for more opinions than mine to make a final call. It looks correct to me, but I wouldn't say that I am great at seeing the tiny die markers like some others here.
Yeah, I looked at a bunch but then my head hurt. That's not a coin I'd send in for grading anyway. I just wanted to make sure in case I ever sell the set (which is 90% complete sans-1913 of course).
If it checks out by the experts, I would highly suggest getting it graded. Key dates like these sell for alot more when they're certified.
I agree with you @RabidRick, perfectly collectable, but no need to spend the dough on grading for what I would call G-4 details (if the surface corrosion is what it appears to be in the image). If you did intend to sell it, just send it to ANACS to have it authenticated very cheaply. It's not often that I would recommend ANACS over PCGS or NGC, but in this case, it's all that it needs.
Yep, it's genuine. These 1885s have funny looking dates... The 5 always looks small compared to the 8's.
