Would you buy this at $1400.00? I'm not starting an argument. Let's hear some Pro and Con SMS variety . This is on eBay . Please remember the rules
You can buy a full SMS set for about $10. That means you can buy 140 sets with $1400. If you sell off the non-cent coins individually and reinvest that money into buying more sets you will have even more sets to cherry pick through. I don't know what the odds are of getting one that would grade better, but it seems overpriced. BTW, NGC population report shows 36 with same grade and 2 better (MS68RD CAMEO). PCGS has 36 with same grade and 1 better (MS68RD CAM). These figures could very well be deceiving as to how many in this grade exist since total graded population is low.
That's a lot of money to spend for a modern cent . But that's just me . If I'm going to spend that kind of money I'd rather have a Flying eagle cent , or save a little more and buy a 1795 Flowing hair Half . Or maybe a nice Greek ancient .
The price is actually not that bad, the key here is that it is a cameo. Now would I spend that much on a memorial cent, of course not, but many registry collectors would.
Sure, that would buy you a lot of complete SMSs. But what do you think are the odds that you'll find a high-grade cameo in the batch? A 66 Ultra Cameo got $2750 BO earlier in the month. If these are going for that kind of money, I would assume that they're not that easy to cherry-pick...
Since I brought up the notion of buying complete sets I'll assume this in response to my comment. I don't know the odds - as stated in my post. It does seem rather high though at $1400, but that doesn't mean that I know it is overpriced. Again, I really don't know. Which is why I use the word "seem" (as in first glance). Perhaps it is worth every penny of $1400. However like most others here have said, I would not pay that price.
I'm thinking 'they are probably as good (maybe)' on a technical grade, but I'm also thinking you aren't going to come across a CAMEO designation. That's the money designation on SMS coins.
I have always thought the SMS coins from 1965-67 were interesting and I would like to put a set together...but not for this kind of money. IMHO, that is just too much for me...even if I had a limitless supply of money. I'd rather buy an MS66RD CAM for 10% the cost (which is what they sell for). Do you have an example of this?
Then...what the 'h-e-double hockey sticks' are you waiting for? If they are truly 67 or better, and 'definite cameos', they really should be graded and slabbed in ANY (well, 'either' NGC or PCGS) holder, and tucked away in a SDB. If not for any other reason than to simply protect them. I don't care what my raw coins are being stored in....I can ALWAYs manage to circumvent any storage method and put a coin at risk of hitting the floor, the corner of a desk, getting swallowed by the couch, etc...lol (have to correct myself....wasn't till after I posted that occurred to me the '66 and '67 sets come in a gov't issued plastic Whitman-type set holder) I'd love to see some of your SMS cameo coins! Are they just Lincolns, or other denominations, and of a specific year, or multiple years??? You obviously got VERY lucky to find multiples of 'honest' cameo'ed SMS set (I've never come remotely close to finding even 'close to cameo')!!
