Call me out on anything you want. This is America if it makes you happy go for it. But I stand behind what i say. And what I have consistently said is that dealers at shows in general appear to me to have a higher margin then online coin sales that if I hunt around and turn over every rock.

Also, you can keep your mutually acceptable price to your self. As I said above market pressure will push the margins down as time goes down.

I am absolutely only interested in buying nice coins. I have no interest in developing any relationships with anyone. Now despite that I have some really good ones I've made with online guys. After you buy a couple high end coins I guess they want to know you. So ironically I have even made relationships despite the fact that I have no primary interest in developing them.

Now Doug is going to read this and tell me i could get an even better price by developing a relationship. Since price is all I'm concerned with. Good response and I respect it. He is telling me I can achieve my goals better with a different methodology. So I'll respond to what I feel is a good point to make.

My response is I think I'm doing very well now my way. And I'm not interested in paying higher prices today to maybe get a deal tomorrow. Just a personal choice.

So getting back to dealers. To be honest I don't care about their expenses. I don't care about them needing to make a living. I only care about buying nice coins at the best prices. If a dealer makes money great. But it is none of my concern how much or little a dealer makes on a transaction, a statement Doug has made to others.

If I want to buy a nice car I have to pay more then a normal car. I also understand that better coins sell for more then grey or list. But I only want to pay as little as possible acknowledging it won't be the same price as a generic white non special coin.

I don't care about anyone selling me any product. When I buy a car I don't want a relationship with the car dealer. I just want the best price on the nicest car. When I go to costco and buy a tv I don't want to get to know the checkout clerk nor do I care if Costco can cover their costs. Maybe yesterday people needed to care about their coin dealer. But in today's world I see it as unnecessary. I'm not "just interested in dollars and cents". I'm interested in coins, buying nice coins and paying as little as possible. I care as little about the coin dealer and their business as the car dealer and costco. If they go out of business the coins don't evaporate and I'll just buy from the next guy.

This is America. I want the best item for the lowest price. That's the American way just like baseball and apple pie. I am not ashamed nor embarrassed about my opinion. I am proud to pay as little for everything I can. I do believe this is a market economy. I see no reason coins are any different from any other widget I buy to make my life better.

This is not about people "ripping me off". My other thread title is

The "I don't buy Coins from coin dealers at shows and stick to online buying" thread

Not "coin dealers are evil and ripping me off thread".

I understand market economies. I understand popcorn costs more at a movie theater then at home. I'm not saying movie theaters are trying to rip me off. I'm not asking to eat popcorn at a theater but pay costco prices. Basically what I'm saying is in today's world I don't have to go to the movie theater and pay more for popcorn. If all I want is great popcorn then I can buy online popcorn and buy popcorn at near what the movie theater pays when they buy popcorn. But you are right. I don't care about the guy who sells me popcorn. I don't care about the movie theater going out of business. The market is there so there will always be someone to sell me what I want. If a movie theater chain goes out of business Hollywood doesn't stop making movies.

What I have been saying all along is I think I can buy good coins without paying movie popcorn rates. And I posted examples. If you really want feel free to go over my coin pics in the "post your coin porn" thread and pick any coin I posted and I'll tell you what I paid. Usually I need to pay around 10-35% above the typical coinfacts or greysheet price. I have made some mistakes and will be honest about them as well. On my coinfacts example coins I can pay up to 50%+ premiums over their last auction price. I'm willing to bleed for those coins. Supply and demand. There are very few coin fact coins and I love owning a coin so pretty it is listed on coinfacts. But the rest of my collection is not so poorly priced. Again I'm willing to be honest about it.

My only questions for you are these. Do you really care about the guy at Costco who sells you a tv? Do you really care about the guy who sells you popcorn?

Thank you. Like I have said I'm not a coin expert and I very much appreciate actually seeing examples of what people were talking about. My best guess is that at my knowledge level I'll do better online then at a show but I very much appreciate people showing me exactly what they meant when they talk about a good deal. I never said the deals are not out there just that I personally had not seen them. Again thank you for your post.

Are you going to sell any of them you could sell the ms66 for over a $1000 makes the other three coins free and you'd probably still pocket $500 profit thats an awesome score.

I am not going to waste my breath with an arrogant, self-important, bargain-hunting anti-hobbyist, who dismisses half of the legitimate sources for coins. I am blocking somebody who is a nuisance, and is only here to vindicate his purchases on Ebay. You like Fleabay, great!!! Enjoy, and let the fun go on--only I won't bother reading your stuff anymore, as it really does not contribute good advice as to how to build a coin collection Last words on the subject--I really do care for the people with whom I do business---I go for "long term" relationships with dealers, as it is mutually beneficial. You don't seem to grasp that, so why bother having a battle of wits with an unarmed man. :)

I guess I'm on ignore so I'll talk to myself. What I really don't understand is this

    1. I said this was possible
    2. I said I personally get better results this different way
    3. I did what I said is possible and posted the exact thing I said was possible.
    4. I even sold a coin to a coin dealer on this board who saw my coins at the shows I said I go to.
    5. I posted the exact coins I purchased with price references and not only didn't lie but was made an offer by a different dealer on this board who wanted to buy the exact coin i posted.

Where in any of this is that horrible attitude ? How is it self important to use a method to collect coins that I had not read anyone using and posted about what I found? Isn't the purpose of this board for collectors to share stories and techniques?

Now I could cut and paste others (pleural) who have agreed with me and use the exact same method to collect coins. But I don't feel the need. However I think it is important to note mine is not a lone voice

Honestly the only thing I did was share my opinion, then post exactly what happened with honest price references.

I understand Doug telling me his opinion is that I would do even better his way. And I understand someone telling me I haven't shown enough proof, that I need to post more examples. I could understand someone doubting I actually bought those coins and wanting more of my "cat selfies" or other proof. People on this board clearly lie to try to get respect. I understand someone wanting proof about my claims about vest pocket selling.

What I can offer is this. I said what I think I can do. I did it. Posted examples, examples Amanda personally saw and witnessed. I even sold her a coin. She saw me selling coins and referred a coin to the penny lady. I have even posted my ebay cost page for a few items like my indian head cents on a thread wondering about fair prices for ihc that are toned. I really feel like I have been pretty honest.

I'll admit I'm an arrogant guy. But the only arrogant crime I see is that I commented on what I was actually doing. providing proof I did it and then not agreeing with people who told me it was impossible to do something I just did. I understand that someone could accuse me of lying about any number of steps here but no one did. And if they did Amanda could either verify or deny. I could even understand being told I got lucky and would not be able to sustain my "record". Someone telling me they wanted more proof. I just won't agree with someone telling me that it was impossible to do something I just did, and provided proof. I didn't hear a lot of people criticize the quality of coins I posted. There are a great many links in the chain that could be questioned. I just don't understand someone telling me there is no chain. I won't agree with someone when I believe I have evidence for a claim and the evidence is simply not addressed and is dismissed out of hand. I don't understand people not asking clarifying questions. I just don't understand you morgandude.

I like the coins you've posted here VV. I also have a similar "shopping behavior" and understand your approach. Just one difference, my coins only have a 3-digit price tag LOL

Edit: PS there are no coin shows where I live so I make 90% of my purchases online.

No argument here as I agree with your statement.

It's the "focused" collector which finds the good deals BUT that good deal is relative to the collector.

Any coin is worth collecting. Money doesn't necessarily change the value of holding a coin in your hand and enjoying the beauty, even if encased in plastic. But just one mans opinion.

I have been buying gold and silver since 02 mostly from YAhoo auctions and Ebay. use to get some great deals on yahoo auctions until Ebay bought them out. I have bought over 5000 coins since 02 spend an average of $2k a month on coins try to buy toned Morgans usually ungraded to try and get cheaper price but its getting harder to to findnatuarl toned ones. I sent 40 coins off to ANACS this past month and 12 where rainbowed toned and only 4 came back as natural toned rest where artificial and then had a 1921 that was a copy only second copy coin i have gotten. What was so funny was that the artificial toned coins and copy came from sellers that have coin shops.

Good deal. Until yours, mine was the best price I had heard of at $111 shipped (snipe off eBay)

I bought a great 1970 Proof 68 star Cameo Kennedy at a show in Portland, Maine before coin shows basically became banned here. The seller was more a collector than dealer, had a great collection of coins he was unloading to pay for his daughters college education I believe. Saw my first large pile of CAC coins. Anyway, I sold the coin when I unloaded every single proof coin, I still kinda miss the 1968/69/70 Kennedy's. Wish I had the details for you Vic, but it was a primo coin for the price, at least in my small world.

I purchased a 1913 Buffalo Nickel Type I MS66 (PCGS) at a coin show in Q1 of this year. I had no relationship with any of the dealers at the show. I found 3-4 others that were close to my criteria for the coin. 3 of the other 4 quoted me prices 10 - 25% above what I thought was FMV. The other one was much higher, something like 75-100% higher. I ended up paying $200 for what I considered to be the nicest coin. I thought I got a decent deal. I talked to the seller for a little bit. I asked him his price, I liked it and without another thought gave him the money and left with a very nice coin.
