Hey all, I was looking at another thread about the 1807/6 large cent. I have 4 or 5 so I wanted to see how mine compared to the other post. Well it seems I have a small 7 but with the large fraction. The reverse is rotated quite a bit. I left the coin in the 2x2 flip so please take in account the glare. Also, to help figure out the degree of the rotation. I marked the obverse top and bottom of the flip and did the same on the reverse. I have other "large" 7's so it's obvious it's the "small" 7. I know that rotated reverses are not that uncommon on large cents, too. I am in the process of assessing my collection and would like to see some comments of possible rarity and value. THANKS
Well it is really had to tell from your images but I think what you have there is a Variety II, that in essence means the “7” does not touch the bottom of the bust, so that actually makes it a large 7 not a small. The Large 7 is pretty common. You need the “7” to touch the bottom of the bust to make it a Variety I and thus a small 7 as far as I know. It appears to me to be a Sheldon 273 variety. Again, it’s hard to say from the photographs. I also can’t see the 7 over 6 in the photos, so I’m just guessing it’s there. As per the condition, I would say it’s probably G04-G06 details because the Liberty is pretty solid in the images even if the date is half worn. The reverse looks to me like a small fraction, but I’m not aware of any 1807/6 small fractions (I’m not saying they are not out there, just that I haven’t seen one). As per value, IF it is a 1807/6 Large 7, I would say $25-$50. I don’t know if the rotation adds to the value because I think damn near all of my large cents (Pre-1820 are rotated to some degree). If it is a Small 7, I would send it off and get it graded because I wouldn't pay the high price of one of those unless I knew it was legit, and I assume most people feel that way. I'm not an expert by any means, I just really like US Large cents and have many myself. That is just my thoughts, I hope it helps somewhat.
I agree the over-date is hard to see on this one. I will take it out of the flip and get pictures of the other 3 to join. The other's are better with the date.
Yeah you can for sure see it. I'll try to take a photo of my 1807/6 tonight. I have tried just about everything to make the worn dates on these coins more readable... and the only thing that seems to work is tons of photos, with way different lighting. I'm still not convinced that is a small 7. but again, I'm not an expert.
I got a really good answer from Tom Deck over at Largecents.net. He said it was easily a "large" 7. I kinda expected after I cropped it and blew it up. I am still wondering of the value with the reverse rotated about 90 degrees clockwise.
well please keep me posted if the rotatedback ups the value... in case you were wondering here is the back of mine
Definitely NOT an 1807/6 either large (S-273) or small 7 (S-272). (273 has a pointed 1 in the date, this one doesn't. Both 2727 and 273 have the top of the 7 into the bust, on this one it is clearly separated.) The reverse is definitely the large fraction reverse used only on S-275 and 276. The position of LIBERTY over the head tells me is isn't 275. It is an S-276 and the 276 almost always comes with a strongly rotated die.
Now that's a kick in the teeth. I thought for sure I was seeing a "6" under the "7". The large fraction had me puzzled with all that I read. Care to throw a value of it for my catalog....thanks!
